Well, the demo is released today for those who pre-ordered the game. Anyone here try it out yet? What do you think?

Personally, I'm thinking this one might be worth picking up. Who doesn't like killing zombies, right? Anyone else thinking the same thing?

I'm still not sure if I'm interested. It seems like it would be fun, but I'm not sure for how long.

Killing hordes of zombies, even if controlled by the director, could get old fast.

Looks like a decent game, didn't try out the demo yet but from the looks of it everyone is liking it.

My roommate is trying to get me to buy the game. I saw him and his friend play the demo together. It looked alright, but not good enough for me to pay $50 for it. My impression is that it is fun because you are playing with friends. There did not seem to be an interesting storyline. But that could be because it was a demo.

After some reviews, and stories, of how the demo plays, I'm almost sold on that alone.

We'll still find out if it's good tomorrow with the demo. God, I can't wait.

I think it loses it's charm quickly playing online, not to speak playing alone..

I'm worried that this game will get very stale very quickly. What has salvaged the demo for me so far though is doing the 4 player co-op with friends rather than random public players - which has been absolutely great fun. Took some screenshots yesterday while I was mucking about in the console.

I played the single player part of the demo. Not bad at all. My main issue is the speed of the zombies. It is just so stupid.

I'm going to be leaving Left 4 Dead on the shelf. If the demo represents the game I'm amazed Valve is offering this for sale. There's no story at all and the characters are interchangeable to the point of being indistinguishable apart from their superficial physical characteristics. The demo was finished before I thought I had only just begun to play. I revisited HL2 Episode 2 last night just for fun and I could not believe the difference--it's startling. If I had not known that Left 4 Dead was a Valve game I would never have guessed it in a million years.

If you have *any* single-player/involving and entertaining story-line requirements for the games you buy--if you like characters with depth--leave this game dead on the shelf, walk away, and consider yourself fortunate to have avoided the lure of the hype. I can't recall the last time I tried a demo that stunk like this--really.

lets see... the hype has always been, kill hoards of zombies with your friends. from day one, the games been marketed as a coop zombie slayer. im not sure where people are getting this idea that its going to have a riveting story line or character depth.

You missed the whole point of the game.

It's a zombie killing game, arcade styled. Just because you didn't get the story out of the demo as you might have liked, doesn't make this a bad game.

You need to remember, first of all, it's a DEMO. It shows gameplay, and that's usually about it.

If you've come to this game looking for a story and character depth, than you're right, it's not for you.

Well, I'm certainly not criticizing anyone else for liking it... I just have to admit that the difference between what I imagined it would be and what it was and apparently what it is as demonstrated by this demo is...night and day.

Help me out here as my memory is a bit hazy--but didn't somebody do a zombie mod a few years ago that was built on the original HL engine? I loved that--and I can't believe I can't remember what it was entitled--it got a lot of attention and was well-liked and widely played and distributed.

I loved that little mod--it was spooky, scary, and had an atmosphere that would curl your socks--and again almost everyone loved it who played it. I think I still have it somewhere--and please pardon me if I've gotten everything mixed up with respect to the actual game the mod was built on.

But just that little mod had so much atmosphere and character that it was a very cool, fun thing to play, and I thoroughly enjoyed it several times.

But this Left 4 Dead? Jeez, it's like somebody's really, really bad idea of a a totally mindless shooter crammed into an atmosphere like the original Max Payne, or something similar.

Nothing really fits...the zombies aren't scary or frightening or eerie--they just exist to rush at you in mad waves of dozens at a time and with just a shotgun I can kill dozens of them easily. I just have to hit most of them--anywhere--even just catching some stray buckshot will kill them quickly. These Zombies don't seem to care about "brains" at all in their diets, and you surely don't have to even come close to hitting their brains to finish them off.

These zombies have all sorts of cheap gimmicks--like the "smokers" exude lots of smoke for some reason and the "suckers" that wrap you in what is I guess their "tongues" so that they can drag you 30 feet before killing you--kind of like the carnivorous barnacles in HL2 only nowhere near as fascinating or interesting. What about the ridiculous "hunters" that looked like fat, putrefying slobs that would *gasp* explode when you shot them at them close range--or else just make a you bit dizzy and blur your vision for a few seconds if you shot them from a bit further away?

Really--these things weren't "zombies"--they weren't scary or horrifying in the least--they were much more like escapees from some insane freak-show carnival...

Last, what about the equally mindless characters in your group? Most of them of them most closely resembled rejects from Doom 3 and UT, if you ask me... Not an original bone in their bodies.

So, the whole demo is nothing more than you and these FPS rejects from the past running around and away from hordes of freaks and magically stumbling upon caches of weapons and ammunition and the whole game was to slaughter the freaks before they slaughtered you. That it's.

Tell you truly--if this demo didn't have Valve's name on it I'd never have suspected Valve of releasing it.

OK, so maybe, just possibly--I'm being premature by judging the entire game on this demo. But gee, the demo was released for the sole purpose of allowing us to judge the game based on the demo play! What *other* reason would a company have for releasing this demo--or any demo, for that matter?

Really, for me, a "game" has to hold my interest, entertain me, and draw me into it before I'll even consider that it *is* a game. This demo just didn't do any of that for me--so I'm not even sure I can even call Left 4 Dead a "game." But then, if it isn't a game, what is it? Right now I couldn't answer that question. All I can say is that I own real games made years ago that put this demo to shame. And to me that's the real shame of the whole thing.

I still think you're expecting too much from the demo. No one other than Valve and a few press people have played the game, and I have a feeling the full game will have a lot more depth than the demo.

I'm not sure if I can respect your opinion yet, seeing as how the game comes out in 2 hours, take 10 mins.

I just purchased the game myself, and I'm really looking forward to the entire game tomorrow.

We'll see :P

I'm ganna be waiting for some interesting multi-player mods before I jump in, as I enjoyed the Zombie mod for Garry's Mod, but only one server with the right set of mod's applied. Other wise I tend to get bored of things quickly. That's just me, I just get bored of FPS online real fast.
