Doom 3
So, I decided to finaly play this game more than a couple of levels and finish it.
All is going well, though the lack of flashlight on the weapons or some night vision goggles is weird, but there is one thing that I don't know if it is just on my end or the game was supposed to be that way.
My weapons (pistol, shotgun, rifle, so far) sound almost like they have sound suppressors on. Like BB guns or something. Is this normal?
Everything else is fine, good game so far.

Sounds weird, the flashlight is supposed to light up a small area yes, but I wouldn't call it's effect weird, also the sounds are supposed to be meaty, have you tried patching the game? (An update enables OpenAL, which helps lots).

Have you tried the flashlight/duct tape mod? I find the game pretty unplayable without it and not half as good.

Ya, you'll definitely want to get one of the flashlight mods. One of them improved the lighting effects for the flashlight making it more realistic too.

I didn't call the flashlight effect weird. I said the decision to not have a flashlight on some of the weapons, or have as a marine some night vision equipment, weird.
openAL? Don't know about that.
I use about 2 years old sound drivers (found them to be the most stable under XP) for my x-fi. I get the option for EAX 4.0, which I have enabled.
All my weapons sound as I said, just like they are behind a wall or under thick pillows or something.
The game is patched with the latest patch yes.
I am in the mission entering/starting Alpha Labs 3.
The game is fine, and I am almost used to the lack of lights, but the sound is a bit of a down. I mean, all sounds are very clear, from voices to background noises, monsters, chatter etc. But my guns. Or I am too demanding and the game is like that for all and it is just me that thinks they do not sound right.

I think you might be expecting too much out of the sounds. I personally found them to be pretty bland, especially for the guns. The "under a pillow" analogy is a good way to put it.

My own guns Different.
I disabled EAX 4.0 HD in the game options and after a restart the shotgun sounds much better. I don't kow of course about the rest of the game. I will give it a try.
Thanks all.

After more gaming like this, I turned EAX 4.0 on.
Gaining a better sound for the shotgun, but losing all the rest nice details is not worth it for me.
I think I am about at least half way through the game and I can now see how not including some proper night vision equipment helps the game. It would make it too easy if there was more light in the game.
Still, a fun game.

You need to install a few mods for this game to make it awsome.
Paralex mapping + better weapon sounds + highres textures on enemys.
makes the game 100x better looking.
also there is a mod to make the flashlight mode WIDE, and also a mod to replace the textures of weapons to more HIGHDEF looking aswell as a mod to add the flashlight to all weapons..
and dont forget to tweak the games settings to add more particals and other effects aswell as better shadows.
this game is highly tweakable.. once all those fixes tweaks and mods are installed you will fully enjoy it more...

Possible spoiler included.
What is that paralex mapping?
I don't know, the game looks pretty good to me as it is now.
I do see how higher resolution textures would be nice, but I have no complaints about how they look now.
As for the flashlight(s), I don't think I want a change to that now. I am used to the limited lights in the game. I think I am near the end now (I am in the mission that says find the portal).
Still, any specific mods that you might want to suggest in case I want to play the game again, would be nice
Oh, one gameplay/story question. At one point I had to make a decision about who to trust, my sergeant or that other guy. Does it change the game (missions etc) depending who I choose?

paralex mapping adds texture bump mapping to the game
makes the game look a lot better and stand out more graphicly.
and about your other question its been ages since i last played the game i cant remember if that affects the game play... i dont think it does, im sure the game still ends the same.

I have to say so far I have problems only with one specific enemy. The guy that has an arm as a whip. Very annoying.
Everything else, no problem.
To add texture bump mapping, shouldn't the game have the files in the first place? Else, we are talking about a large amount of data.
Oh, anyone else finds/found the pistol, useless? I now use it to destroy any corpses that I find, I saw on occasion two apparently dead bodies rise, so no more Mr. Nice Guy. Humans, aliens, demons, dead or alive, I destroy them.

What did you all think of Tankn00b and his MES HAL? (Spoilers. They'll probably make you laugh, though.)

LOL, I don't think I used the duck/crouch once in the game till you mentioned it. Thank you.
I am in Hell or "Hell" now. Surprisingly not as difficult at this part as I thought it would be. Funny that the lighting in Hell is better than on a Mars' colony.
Beautiful game.
Co-op? Nah, Don't have the buddies necessary to play this game co-op.

Co-op is the only way to play this game. :P
I've found the OpenCoop mod to be better than the Last Man Standing Co-op mod after playing each quite a bit. LMS is nice for its extra maps/game types, but it's just too buggy and has terrible netcode.

this game was so boring and unfrightening, i had to uninstall it. quake 4 was more creepy and action packed. when they change him into a strogg was just disgusting.

I quite enjoyed Doom 3, i can't remember where i read it but i'm sure i read a really good quote.
"Doom 3 uses one of the most advanced, highly scaleable game engines today, just a shame there's no light to see anything".
the few criticisms i did have were that the torch beam was way too small, absolutely useless and there's TOO MUCH DARKNESS ALL THE FRICKEN TIME..
