Project Torque Open Beta starts today
http://project-torque.aeriagames.com/
This racing game is unknown to most. It is free to play and download and always will be. When the final product comes out you will be able to purchase what they call Aeria Points to be able to upgrade your character faster but most things will be able to be upgraded the old fashioned way. I started playing during the closed beta and I am totally hooked. The closed beta started on Aug 9th, I started around Aug 20th?, and it ended on Oct 1st. In that time I had 1200 races, 8 days of race time, 75% win ratio, second highest license holder, and for the most part didn't get bored once. For the last couple weeks of the CB it was getting hard to find full races because people knew there was going to be a database wipe at the end. It is considered an MMOG and is worth the download. The new client will be available sometime today so I would wait until it is released or you might have to download it again. Anyhow, I thought some people here might like to give it a try. Don't go flaming when you find out that this game doesn't look like Crysis or play like GTR2 or rFactor. This is a different type of game and is in early development with huge potential.

Ya, MMOG......Like I stated in my first post.
Latency doesn't play a big role in ability like it does in FPS games. Every now and again certain rooms have a lag issue and some players have problems controlling there cars because the main server can't sync with all the clients correctly. Over the course of the closed beta most of those problems went away and there are people playing competitively with very slow connections.

So, would you say it is similar to the Trackmania games?
Is collision with other cars possible, or possible to disable it?

It is closer to being a sim than an arcade racer and is ten times funner for me than TN. There are well thought out tracks of many different styles, street, circuit, speedway, city, country, large, small, etc..There are different race types also, race, ctf, explorer, high speed heat, with more to come from what I here.
Yes there are collisions with other players in pro mode with the option of racing in ghost mode and there is a beginner mode that has no option other than running in ghost mode.
Just like with all online racing games there are wreckers. A good feature of this game is the host of the room can kick known wreckers before the race starts.
The servers for the open beta will be up sometime today depending on your timezone and then you will be able to give it a try. The game devs and GM's are being really vague about exactly what is being added and fixed for the new client so what I say here may change a little or allot. It is just like every other beta so you just have to wait and see. I am 100% sure that if you even remotely like racing online then this game is worth the download. The old client was a little less than 400mb before all the patches so who knows what the new client size will be.

I would like to bump this thread because the game is now officially commercial with many updates since I last posted. It is very stable now and has some very competitive racing and growing community. The existing cars just got re-balanced to prepare for new cars coming after the holidays. We have a few licensed cars now with allot more coming soon. Hope to see some peeps there soon that I have talked to over the years.
Merry Christmas
