Guild wars....
is it one of those MMOs that you have to pay for on a monthly basis?

Nope, no monthly fees. Once you pay for it, you can play it. Fun game, but I'm into WoW now. If you start playing GW, give me your info, we could play together some time.

i think you can have 6 characters per account, and additional characters if you have the addon, its a very cool game, you never get lag, considering its free (apart from the game disc)

It's actually 4 characters slots per game account. So if you buy Guild Wars (prophecies) and Guild Wars Factions you can have 8 slots if you keep the two accounts separate. If you merge them you get 2 aditional game slots to your original account giving you 6 slots to play with.
Oh, and about the game itself: It's superb. Apart from lacking anything else to do then fighting you can hardly hold anything against it. The support is incredible (patching is done while you play), there are free events and improvements coming out in a steady stream, the game has only one "server", letting you play with people from anywhere in the world if you chose to.
Graphically speaking the game is nice too look at with nice spell effects and a very long draw distance. Player models are beautifully detailed and superbly animated. Sound is nice as well with great songs written by Jeremy Soule (more can be bought and downloaded via directsong.com).
PvP and PvE are equaly fun in both Prophecies and Factions (with the later leaning a bit more on the PvP side). The game knows no downtime with all the content accessible within seconds (map travel is instantaneous to already discovered locations).

sweet .
another question on the game now......each account is per CD-key right? so one CD-key is one account? if not, how do the accounts work?

Yes, one account per CD-key. But like I said, you can merge 2 CD-Keys (a Prophecies one and a Factions one) into the same account, giving you 6 character slots in that account instead of the regular 4.
The bonus of merging the two games is that you will then be able to access the content of both games with all of your characters, which is good because certain skills can only be found in one of them and not in the other.
On the other side, registering both CD-Keys with different accounts gives you two more character slots (4 per each account = 8) then if you merged them.

yeah, just sign in to her account using her info, but pick your character to play with.
my gf plays it on her own, but logs in using our sons account

Yes, you can play your own character with her account. But take notice that unlike with other MMOs, all of the characters can only belong to a single guild. So if you/she joins a guild, all of the characters in her account will be part of that guild as well.
