Might and Magic: Dark Messiah Demo Discussion

Please discuss all things pertaining to the demo here. I am interested to see if this game can stand up to Oblivion. It looks more hack and slash to me than RPG atm.

Currently Downloading from filefront at 270 kbs.

Well upon playing it through the training and the first level this game seems mediocre. No real wow to it. The game mechanics are a little weird as it never really feels like the source engine or anything at all. Kicking people is far too usefull and combat is horrid, You'd be lucky to hit a wall if you were facing it, 1 ft away and choppying repeatedly at it with a 5 ft blade. Sometimes also when I swung at enmies I would miss completely when it looks like I hit them (source hitboxes) and I also would be really far away from them and when I swung on accident it was like I was sniping them with a sword.

I unistalled it after playing through it, just wasn't fun in any way and the story sucked.

Also, beware about the demo its over 2gb installed. Also there are no actually classes u get to choose from, just points that go to stuff.

I would like to see someone else's opinion on it though as I tend to be very hard on games.

My earlier attempt to download failed part way through while I was gone.

I'm downloading again and am about 50% @ 267 KB on a fairly well filled up server. Hope it doesn't fail again.

Might and magic games always seem to fall short, not sure why...

Well, I got the download, got it installed, and my first attempt to load the game was thwarted by my firewall. The second attempt worked fine.

It also plays nicely on my system at 1024x768. I was seeing FPS of 30-50.

I kind of like the kick move.

Frankly, though, there's really not enough here in the demo to really get into it. It was over much too quickly.

I also felt quite constricted after playing Oblivion for so long. I'm likely spoiled forever on the wide open spaces type of games. This one, at least so far, made me feel like I was on a dog leash. You know? Go this way, you can't go that way...at least not very far.

The Controls weren't all that hard to get used to for me. Quickslots are pretty straightforward and easy to know which is which due to the small icons on the screen. Still, I'd really like to see a game expand the quickslots to a system similar to NWN where you could get to more of them by pressing the Shift and CTRL keys.

Combat does leave something to be desired, though. It was difficult to know if you were on target in melee especially.

I'll likely play this through a few times and try different things. The bow seems to work well. Didn't get a chance to use the daggers before I reached the end. Never really thought about them to be honest. So, that's another thing to try.

Still, I'll likely end up getting this one when it's released as long as I can get it on sale or special.

I think it is pretty fun and fast paced altho I can't get the FPS that I want at 1280 x 1024 (I get mid 20s). Sword play is really really fun in the game too and almost every fight is different. You can kill someone by knocking them into fire or into spikes etc etc. I do have one problem though and that is when I put AA up past 2x (4x or 6x) the textures become a really bright white. It doesn't do it at the 2x setting.

The combat can best be described as arcadey, and unrealistic. Didn't enjoy it.

unrealistic combat? yes.
Really fun anyway? Hell yes.

Kicking is a bit wierd, you might aswell kick the guy to death, but I really enjoyed the combat, when you finish 'em off with your special slow-mo decapitation move! Its real fun!
And there are loads of ways to kill your enemy.

1. Kick them into a fire, while they burn stab them repeatidly.
2. Kick them into a fire. Then Kick them into another fire.
3. Set them on fire with a arrow (lit from a near by fire), then throw a box at their head making them fall off a cliff.
4. Kick them into wall of spikes.
5. Shoot arrow at wooden support, collapsing walkway with orc on top, and crush orc below, stabbing any survivors in the chest.
6. Sword locked in sword test of strenght! Until you make him drop his weapon and kick him into a fire! (Or what ever)

The fighting was alot more fun then Obivion fighting It is just a fun hack and slash. I'm looking forward to harder opponents.

Was well dissapointed with the end of the demo
spoiler - I'd like to see him kicked into a fire!! :O
