Do I need a 360??

The xbox 360 looks very tempting and the future lineup is pretty impressive. Right now I have an above average PC with 7800GT, a modded Xbox with 80 Gig HDD that I use only for the media center, hardly play any games on it now, a PSP 1.5 FW and 2 Gig Memory Stick.

Should I get a 360 by giving away the xbox and PSP. I love the media center on the xbox, as I play all my movies of it, dont have any other standalone players. Will I lose my media playing capabilities by giving the Xbox away?

I only have a Standard TV(32" Magnavox) but I do have a 19" TFT LCD Monitor. Is that enough to enjoy the 360? An additional investment on HDTV is out of question as I dont watch too much TV other than college football.

If the future lineup seems impressive, wait until those "impressive" games come out in my opinion..

Price of the console may drop in retaliation to PS3 and Wii launch.. that's what I think anyway

Agreed, if there isn't any real games you are jumping at the bit for, hold off until there are.

i'm sorta in the same boat as you (but i dont want to purchase a 360). I have a 7800 gt and a modded xbox. If you do purchase a 360 you can mod it too. The graphics are impressive, but the games i've seen have just been redone from the original xbox version, so i'm still waiting to see some completely new games made just for the 360 (forgive me if there are some next gen out). You'll be able to enjoy it on a 32". My friends have a smaller tv than that and it's still a lot of fun (although it is hard to read text on the 360 using a small tv).

They are dropping the price of the 360 by a 100 bucks, so that's some incentive. If i were you, i wouldn't, but i guess i'm not much of a console gamer. On another note, you should play/get fight night 3 and Black for original xbox.

the wii isnt going to be competing against the 360 or ps3 (you probably know this), its going to be a LOT cheaper. In the news article that someone posted about ms lowering the 360 price, someone made a good point that this would allow one to buy a 360 AND a wii for less than the ps3. The wii sounds the most fun out of all 3. I will definately consider buying one after the hype.

LOL good try... Unless you sell it you are not going to make much money off a trade. You would be lucky to get $100 on a trade. Selling to to someone you might get $100 but don't think any more? You can get the cheap version of the psp for like $150 now...

in a direct response to you question "do i need a 360?" i say, no, you dont need one, you need food, sleep and oxygen, not a gaming machine

but me being bored aside, you cant go wrong with a 360 they are a great console, and there are infact quiet a few games that arent remakes.
if you use your old xbox for a media center, youll love x360 for a media center, its better in every way.

the x360 would look decent on your normal def TV, and it would look nice on your monitor too, so you win either way there.

Markius, I use the homebrew app. xbox media center which can play movies and dvds of any format and region. Is the 360 capable of doing that or do you have to couple it with a Media center PC?

you mean you modded your original xbox like this ?

http://www.driverheaven.net/articles/xboxmod/

Well no the 360 cant support everything these mods can out of the box, as some of them are classed as illegal. im sure in time however people will crack the dashboard in the same manner.

If you have money to burn, go ahead. I bought an XBox when FarCry Instincts came out, which was a little silly because i could have waited for the 360, then i bought the 360 for FarCry Instincts Predator. So basically i got the 360 for 1 game. Couldn't resist, i wanted more FarCry...

However i just got Perfect Dark Zero, demo was good, can't wait to play, and as time goes on i will pick up a game here and there and enjoy a particular game that might run better than my current setup, or something that's not available on PC. Either way, i play games, whatever the system, if it entertains me for a couple of hours, then it was worth it.

Ill forgive you for this rather silly comment as I know you are a Sony fanatic

how about?

Project Gotham Racing 3
Tomb Raider Legends (which runs great in next gen mode, unlike PC)
The Outfit (fun game)
Rockstars Table Tennis
Fight Night Round 3 (best boxing game ever)
Dead or Alive 4
Over g Fighters (good combat sim)
NBA2k6 (best basketball game ever)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (much superior to the Pc version)
Burnout Legends (best burnout game available)
Motogp06 (best bike game ive played yet)
and quite a few more including just released xbox live games like street fighter and frogger in true classic arcade mode.

Soon to be titles
Saints Row (great GTA a like game).
Splinter Cell (the new one).
Test Drive Unlimited (demo is wicked and fully online racing game).
and quite a few more coming soon.

To be honest I have played the 360 more in the last 6 months than my high end pcs and I cant say that about any console. However I will say to fully take advantage of the 360 you do need a HDTV input (also bear in mind you can wire it through a good LCD monitor like a dell 2405 , 2005 via component or VGA).

Yes the more, the better. Just like PC, if you have a large monitor/tv, surround sound and the component/vga cable it will enhance the experience. I bought the vga cable and tried it on my 19" crt, and it's sweet, can only imagine what it must be like on 30+ lcd/plasma or 50+ dlp...

There is also this XSATA connector... Allows you a direct connection via usb to your PC, makes use of the PC's HDs. Should make media presentation better, i think, not to sure how it works, i'll try and get one.
360 is great for MM, can stream music and pics from PC, or plug in your mp3 player and it will detect and use that. Video has to be on the 360 HD which is s shame, unless you mod, which i don't intend to do.

I have a 19" LCD TFT monitor but sure dont have money around to spend on a HDTV. I think I will wait till November when Gears of War comes out. Of the games right now, only PGR3, Kameo and PDZ sound interesting. Saints Row looks good but i was never a big fan of GTA. Dead Rising is the one I want to play somehow. Just to reduce the itch I got myself a PSP and boy its a sweet machine. Having tons of fun playing my gba roms on it and Loco Roco is one hell of a game. Got it after reading Zardon's review.

I think to buy a 360 now wouldn't be a good move, nor would buying a Wii nor PS3 for a few months after launch too, wait to see how everything pans out, the first quarter of 2007 is crucial, when it all pans out (A heck of a lot of 3rd party devs are waiting to start AAA titles until after they see where the money is), then decide, if the 360 does well out of it, by all means, buy one.

Edit: Zardon, going through that game list, none of them screams "Buy a 360 for me" at me, they all are good games, yet none are killer titles, not even Saints Row, and the other titles slated for release this year count as AAA, its all 2007, next year will be the year to decide what console to get, until then, i'll slug on with my PC, GC, PS2, Dreamcast, DS, etc.

Well i guess thats just your personal taste, ive been playing several of them for 3-6 months such as NBA2k6, my kid brother and me have played it since it came out and its still brilliant as they update the rosters constantly, I cant remember the last time a PC game held my interest that long. The replay value of games like project gotham and a few others on that list is the highest ive played. Ive also owned all the consoles you have, and still have several of them in the house and none of them held my interest as long as the 360 or as often either. whenever I get a few free hours ive generally a game loaded on the 360. The video output is also amazing especially to a large HDTV - something ive always wanted instead of blocky chunky 640x480.

I think its pretty arrogant of people to force their opinions on you as to what or what is not a killer title or what is good. If you dont like a game or feel its average thats fine but its YOUR opinion, but I reckon until you actually play them rather than reading a review on gamespot its hard to tell.

The 360 has been worth the price alone for 3 or 4 games for me. As for anyone else? I honestly dont really care

Now now, you know what I meant by killer title, I mean the Halo's, the GTA's. the Fable's, Zelda, etc, epic games, that draw people to either console, now, I have played most of the games you listed (Still need to play Table tennis though, friend has it, yet I havent got round to it), and none really show off the quality the 360 really has, all are either multiple format titles, or are yearly updates, the only game that has come close to really harnessing the 360's power is Oblivion (Which I have on PC).

Anyway, yes, it is only my opinion that on analysis of current games, the 360 isnt worth buying, however, I am not alone in the industry to think that 2007 is when fireworks will happen, and this year has been a slow one, not just in the console arena, but the wider market (Handhelds excluded, as the DS and PSP have had an epic war this year), there is a dearth of quality games out there, and it doesnt look like getting better until 2007.

As I said though, only my opinion, if people out there are enjoying their 360s with whats out there, great, more power to them, but the OP asked if the 360 was worth getting now, I only imparted my opinion on the matter, nothing more, I am not confident nor arrogant enough to expect my views to be seen as anything but what they are, my views.
