COD 2, I love the new engine
Hey guys, I ahve never really been a gmaer but I got a few games from my girlfriend..I really like COD, I got all the way through to my surprise I am not usually into games that much. So last night she reaches into her bag and throws COD2 at me... I must say WOW, I only had about 45 minutes to play it last night and I can't play it right now but I am in love with the new engine, man what a difference from the first one. As I said guys I am not really a big gamer but I am getting the bug. TH new effects this engine has just blew me away for the 45 minutes I was playing it. Seeing steam coming from the soldiers mouth in Russia, seeing the darkened room light up when I fire my gun's..or even the sound it is amazing. So I have a new game to play for a while. I think I am getting the fever guys.. I am not that far into the game and I know I haven't seen anything yet. what I was wondering is there any required patches needed?

They are both amazing games. Although, TBH, I enjoyed the first one more than the second.
As for patches, check out this site:

I just got done the first one the other day, I really did enjoy that, I must have or I wouldn't have finished it. Is it worth my time to get the United offensive expansion pack? -it's funny because I bought that off a second hand dealer got it home and the second disk had a crack from the midlle to the edge..you couldn't see it unless you looked right at it..

BTW, can you give me some pointer for tweaking the engine..for instance I have a DX9 card so is it better to set it to render in DX 7 or DX 9? or use auto..does that mean it'll scan and if you have a DX9 card it''l use that. I am just amazed at the quality of the engine..

Hmmmmm....well, I finished COD2 around the end of December. So, my memory may be a little rusty. Offhand, I do think I set it up for DX7. But, I can't recall for sure. I do know that many of my buddies did do that and sang the praises about it.
For sure, if your system can handle it with DX9, use it! If, however, the FPS drop drastically during heavy activity, you might enjoy it more with more fluid action. That's where the DX7 option can come in handy.
I'd use that Auto Detect option and see what the game suggests for settings. If, after doing that, you're not satisfied, you can always change the settings manually without affecting any progress.

I'm an avid COD2 player and its a great game no doubt.
My Comp said I should use Dx9, but it gave me a FPS of 20-30 if i looked at the floor :/
I mean some SP levels wouldn't even load up.
With Dx7 I usually get 125, so i use that. Though i would love the chance to run it smooth in Dx9 one day

Thats kinda weird, your system seems new enough, maybe your having som type of issue. You have a DX 9 card, did you crank everything up?

COD 2 is tough on the shaders of your video card, maybe try DX 9 mode then in the texture options, turn them down abit, i played with all settings maxed, except for those texture detail ones, had to monkey with those to get playable frame rates, the normal mapping one will prolly kill those cards(9800Pro), all else fails DX7 plays awsome

You have to hand it to them pretty smart way to design a game, they wanted the game to be playable on the maximum amount of systems. I was never really a big gamer but the COD series has changed that for sure.. I am just really impressed with the visuals, they will probably get some kind of awards for this one. BTW is it true that a bunch of the original designers of MOHAA ended up designing COD and COD2? also you guys who play alot of games, what would be the best settings to get good frame rates but the best visuals, I guess this is just trial and error on the part of the user..

Yes, it's pretty much trial and error because each system is so different there's really no 'one size fits all'.
My usual first approach is to just use Omega's drivers 'out of the box' as he spends a lot of time testing them and they are designed with games in mind.
One setting that really gives the system a hit is AA. It's usually better to use a larger resolution with little or no AA. But, if you want AA try using lower resolutions.
I also make sure that Trilinear is active.
If you have a lot of system RAM, try using a larger AGP Aperture. This is controlled within the BIOS. I most generally use either 128 or 256 MB. This setting controls how much memory is made available for textures. Again, this is something that works by trial and error to see which works best with your system. (I'm not yet aware of whether this setting is effective or available with PCI express systems.)
A lot of people have mentioned how much better their game performance is with 2 MB of System RAM. If you don't have that and can afford it, get it. I'm sure it makes enough of a difference to be worth it.
I'm sure there will be others with more suggestions.
Happy gaming!

Well it's very smart actually, creating a game that's playable on the greatest amount of systems. This ensures the greatest numbers of sales. Reminds me of the original Unreal Tournament that included software rendering, We used to play that game on 266's LOL. We prefered to play them on the 700's That was a while ago..
