Seems like..

Unreal 2 is more power hungry than UT2003. 9500 and 9700 owners run it no problem. But I'm getting FPS of 20s in certain scenes of the game. It's really bothersome, for it hinders gameplay when you're moving sluggishly. I'm using a 8500 paired up with a P4 1.99 GHz. UT2K3 runs fine with my system, but Unreal 2 has troubles at certain spots. The real shame is that there isn't OpenGL mode either in Unreal 2. It's all D3D. And despite what the minimum requirements say, don't even bother with anything under 1.2 GHz and anything sub 8500 standard. It's just not the same game with anything below.

no Unreal 2 has higher texture details, it takes a harder hit on rigs, but you should try turning down the ingame details.

My mate runs it great at 1024 on his 4600. have you asked anyone else with a 8500 how its running for them? what res are you running it at?

1024 x 768

I let the Engine determine the best settings and I change the resolution from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768. Also: I've turned on Triple Buffering, Compressed Light Maps, upped the min desired framerate..

Don't compressed light maps cause a performance hit?

If it's like ..

Taken from 3DSpotlight Guide to UT2K3 Optimization: UseCompressedLightmaps=x. When set to True this enables Lightmaps to be compressed, which will increase level loading time, though can improve frame rate by reducing Video memory requirements for levels. If you have a Graphics card with 128MB or more Video memory you might want to set this to False to ensure Lightmap quality is at its greatest as you should have sufficient Video memory to use them uncompressed & with slightly improved level loading times as they won’t have to be compressed during loadimh or if your Graphics card doesn’t support texture compression, e.g. TNT 2 set this to False also.

Junk is on a distinguished road

TweakTown's UT2K3 Guide backs that up:
Quote:
UseCompressedLightmaps=True

Using compressed lightmaps can improve your graphics performance quite noticeably, however the colors and shadows in the game (based on these "lightmaps") will not be quite as nice or crisp. If you have a fast system with 128MB of VRAM or more, set this option to False for best image quality and slightly quicker loading times, but at the cost of a few fps.
