I don't have any quarrels with Creative. I have a Live! 5.1 that works perfectly and sounds great. All of the features that I've used have worked just fine, so I've never even had to deal with their support department. That said, I know almost everybody who reads this hates Creative, so I thought I'd post this flamebait message for you.

Philips Acoustic Edge ... hmmm... It supports EAX, DirectSound, A3D, and Qsound...
As far as awards.... Lets see. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The editors' of CNET Gamecenter have named the Philips Acoustic Edge "Best Sound Card" in their Gamecenter computer game awards for 2000 article." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CNET Editors' Choice Award: "The bottom line: Forget everything you've heard: this is the finest sound card on the market." "Oozing with professionalism and polish, the Philips Acoustic Edge is the finest sound card available." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The leading sound card web site, 3DSoundSurge, awarded the Acoustic Edge their "Silver Surge of Approval" award which is as high an award they have ever given to a sound card." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maximum PC Kick Ass! Product Award: "Best gaming audio", "Best upmixing of stereo audio" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gamers Depot Sound Card of the Year Award: "What I can tell you is this: just listening to stereo music is a new experience with the Acoustic Edge sound card." "What can I say? This is the best consumer-level sound card I've run into, knocking the SoundBlaster Live! from the lofty perch it's sat on for years now. The technology used in this card to simulate and to enhance surround sound is revolutionary, and other cardmanufacturers will be hard-pressed to come up with something this good." "Hail to the NEW king, baby!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neoseeker Editor's Choice Award: "The Acoustic Edge is a superb product. One that deserves to be recognized with top of class standings. " "I can say without a doubt that this is the sound card I will be recommending to all my friends for a while …The Acoustic Edge is a superb product. One that deserves to be recognized with top of class standings" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Installation is as simple as can be… This is definitely one of the easiest sound cards I’ve ever installed.” … “We had no problems at all with the card during use. Everything we threw at it sounded superb …” “I was also very impressed how the card can convert a simple stereo source into something amazing, even with just two speakers and a sub-woofer.”… “At $99 the Acoustic Edge 5.1 is not only in direct competition with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, it goes a few steps further by offering more capabilities, making it my current sound card of choice.” Rod White, Flight Simulator World Magazine, “3 New Sound Cards” Read the entire article in the March 2001 edition on pages 47-50 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Coming out of nowhere, Philips serves up the best audio of any card currently on the market.”… “What's most impressive about this card is its ability to automatically route audio signals to the appropriate decoders. This amounts to providing the best possible positional and environmental sound, as well as background music, without any fiddling on your part. Now that's cool!” … “… the Philips Acoustic Edge edged out the competition both in performance and price.”… “Philips Acoustic Edge, is one of the finest sound cards that you can plunk into your PC at this time… It's a professional, awesome-sounding product, and a surprising release from Philips.” … “The Guru thought long and hard and determined that if he had to make a recommendation this very instant (and he does), his nod for best sound card would go to the Philips Acoustic Edge. It's what now resides in the Perfect Game PC.” Chuck Miller/The Game Guru , CMPNet Gamepower “Perfect Game PC” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “With support for everything from two-speaker analog to 5.1 analog and digital speaker sets, and with very clean and spacious sound reproduction, the Acoustic Edge is a major contender, …” “Unlike the Hercules and Creative offerings, the Acoustic Edge achieves its flexibility without the additional footprint of a breakout box.” … “In fact, EAX 2.0 sounded better on the Acoustic Edge than others cards, including the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1, for which the standard was originally developed.” … “In fact, the card's ability to optimize any sound source to a given speaker set is its strongest suit and makes it unique among the competition.” Steven Smith , ZDNet Gamespot, “Philips Acoustic Edge” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I have also tested this card with Quake 3, NFS Porsche Unleashed, and the new Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer test. All of them sounded better than with any other sound card I have used to date… I actually heard sounds of sheep and birds with this card that I had never heard previously. Very nice.”… “All around, this is the best audio device I have used in my PC” … “Quite honestly, the Acoustic Edge may be more than the average user needs. But with three sound solutions including the Acoustic Edge, Seismic Edge and Rhythmic Edge. You simply cannot go wrong.” OC Addiction, “Philips Acoustic Edge” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I noticed that the highs and lows were handled much more accurately with the AE, resulting in a "cleaner" sound. MP3's that exhibited distortion with the Live! card (mostly extremely low bass) sounded better with the AE.” … “With the Acoustic Edge from Philips, the Klipsch achieved a new level of excellence. . . . Subtle passages in classical music are delicate, detailed, and crisp…and with the click of the mouse, rock or metal can blister your ears without distortion.” … Another compliment goes to the AE for its compatibility with different games and each game's utilization of surround sound .” … “Philips has an excellent 5.1 solution at a very competitive price… I am impressed with the ease of installation and compatibility with Windows 2000… The card has many features that add to its value, with the main one being full-time 5.1 sound from all input sources. Solid drivers, a good software bundle, and excellent product support all make this a good choice for your next sound card.” PC Abusers, “Philips Acoustic Edge” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “ This sound card is quite impressive for the $99 price tag. I'd venture to say Philips has entered this market with authority.”… Obviously, the most important aspect of any sound card is how it sounds, and this card certainly does not disappoint.” … First, musical playback was quite impressive. Whether it be CD or MP3, this card breathed new life into the music.” … “ … sound playback for DVD was awesome …Gaming was great with the Acoustic Edge … I could still tell that the QSound enhancements kicked in and aided in the production of 3D quality sound.”… “I was particularly impressed with the high-quality music playback from this card. I am confident it will make any set of speakers sound better.” David Risley, PC Mech, “Philips Acoustic Edge” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “There was the Philips Acoustic Edge, wrapped up like a woman in Saran Wrap, and just like the women, even sexier with the wrapping off. (Insert construction worker whistle). This card is hot, seductively dressed in a black PCB with gold accents on the PCI pins, a blue ‘line in’ and pink ‘mic in’, a splash of yellow for the ‘game port’ and the green and black ‘DIN’ connectors, dressed to the nines and she's mine, she's mine.” … ““The Edge” takes your gaming experience to a whole new level by giving you the surround sound experience as you become submersed in your game.” … “So there you have it - a real contender and competition for the SoundBlaster Live series … Finally, an excellent alternative to Creative and Hercules sound cards.” Ken O’Rielly, Envy News, “Philips Acoustic Edge Review” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “The most striking feature to me is the "5.1 (6 channel) channel analog output". And trust me, it really does work. Being able to hook up 3 individual sets of speakers is very nice. I had my Klipsch Promedia's and an older pair of Altec Lansing speakers hooked up to this card. Using the Altec's as my surrounds, I could use 2 of the satellites from the Klipsch speakers as my center.” … “Overall, the sound quality is noticeably better then the Sound Blaster Live.” … “Gaming sound quality was awesome. Reverb effects seemed more apparent in UT than when using the XP Gamer. I did not come across any issues when playing any of my games, and everything I threw at the Acoustic Edge sounded great.” … “All in all, the Philips Acoustic Edge is an excellent sound card.” Void Your Warranty, “Philips Acoustic Edge Review” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Compared to the Creative’s SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 card, which only has 32-3D hardware accelerated channels, the Acoustic Edge is a monster!” … “The installation of the Acoustic Edge was so easy” … “The other item that I tried out the Acoustic Edge with is MP3’s. I fired one up and I was literally blown away by Acoustic Edge’s QMSS. It was EXCELLENT” … “The Acoustic Edge really is a remarkable card. Philips incorporated all the best features of many different sound cards, as well as their own, and then rolled them into the Acoustic Edge. It is my firm belief that currently the Acoustic Edge is THE BEST sound card out there.” Rajan Minhas, One PC, “Philips Acoustic Edge Sound Card” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Listening to Audio CDs, MP3s (Well anything with a Stereo source basically) was a whole new experience with the Acoustic Edge thanks to QMSS (QSound Multi-Speaker System) enhancements.” … “Overall the Music Audio Quality with the Acoustic Edge is quite amazing. Playback had a greater surround feeling to it thanks to QMSS & it really is a genuine improvement.” … “The major differences in Game Audio was that of Stereo content which of course was greatly enhanced with the QMSS algorithms…” “Excellent Control Panel & Help files.” … “The Philips Acoustic Edge is a great Soundcard.” Thomas McGuire, 3d Spotlight, “Philips Acoustic Edge review” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is some serious praising going on in all of those articles... I wonder why? hehehehe

PC Magazines produce favorable reviews for the highest bidder. They're basically vessels for latent advertising, prepackaged and prettied-up for the mindless masses. Give me an independent website's opinion over some corporate magazine's any day.
Creative writes shitass drivers and produces wonderfully overrated cards. I though the SBLive was great until I had two of them die on me, and got a Phillips. And all the magazines are owned by the same frickin' company anyway. |
