Radeon 8500 SUCKS
I recently picked up a Radeon 8500 card to replace my Geforce 2 Ultra. What a f**king mistake. Now when I play online i can't get any steady performance, FPS jumps around from as low as 8 to 70 in Halflife/C-Strike, Quake 3 games are unplayable due to the craptacular performance, 16-25 fps is not playable. I have tried different resolutions, different detail settings, different drivers and ALL to no avail. I still cannot play online due to performance issues. Then I try to contact ATI for some support, YEAH right, like that did anything to alleviate the problem. They have not responded to multiple e-mails and the 52 minutes I waited on hold with tech support was the icing on the cake, they must have alot of equity tied up in the phone company to leave customers on hold like that when it is NOT a toll-free call. They have the same mentality as the government of Canada, no accessibility = no accountability. So this being my 4th ATI product, it will also be my last. I'd be willing to give Matrox another chance before I ever waste my time, money and hardware real estate on another ATI piece of shit.

Not really. Never had any big issues with their previous vid cards, but this Radeon just hates me or something. It's so bad that I've uninstalled ALL the games on my system, Halflife, Quake, RTCW, MoH:AA, JK2, even Dungeon Siege and several others. Now the only game I play is Scrabble because it's the only one where performance doesn't go right out the window when I'm playing. I would like to take a moment and thank the engineers and tech. support people at ATI for rendering what was a mediocre gaming-rig into a web-browsing and text editing WONDER.

Damn I dont know if you are serious or just getting into the mood of this section lol, I mean I had a hercules ultra II prophet (geforce II ultra) for a year or so, and while I loved it... it certainly is not a patch on the this 8500 retail (oclocked to 300/300).
did you get bad frame rates in everything?

I get good FPS in single play mode of most games, but I have finished them all, so multiplayer it is. I think it's the IRQ the RAdeon is using, IRQ 10, which just happens to be the IRQ that my NIC is using. Windows won't let me change either card's IRQ, even if I put the NIC/SC in different PCI slots or take the NIC/SC off completely. As soon as Windows installs the drivers it automatically assigns both my Radeon and NIC to IRQ10 and nothing I've tried has been able to change this.

I have an Aopen Tower, Aopen Tower with 300W PS and I am not interested in buying a new OS just to satisfy the wants of this 8500.

Have you tried a BIOS reset of IRQ data (most can do this) and running as a non-PnP OS? Try that along with switching the NIC's PCI slot if possible. Asus boards usually have a hard-tie between specific PCI slots and IRQs. You probably just need to get that Radeon alone on an IRQ.
The only board I've owned that wasn't hiddeously sensitive to IRQ sharing is my current (ALi-based) XP333-R. Damn fine board once you learn how to tweak it.

Deji..
use candyman's uninstall method (add/remove, erase everything named ati*.*, delete a couple ati reg keys), toss your nic in a slot far far away from the 8500, and start off by using 640x480 res when youre playing mp.

Had to resort to Very drastic measures, as the seizures that now wrack my body have made typing difficult and hardware re-installation impossible(Jonesing for some online gaming SUX). I have retro-fitted my rig with my old Rage IIC vid card and my most ancient 3DFX Voodoo 4 megs of Glide Powered, Pixelicious Opengl Behemoth, hehe. At least I can get 36-45 FPS in Halflife, it really sucks ass but it is better then 8 FPS that my Mighty(Dud) Radeon 8500 was dropping to.
To all of you that can claim video superiority, I Salute you.

bummer man. seems that you arent the only one that had trouble with the 9031s though...but if you've already gone ahead and given up on it, then why don't you donate your 8500 to the Rage3d F@H team

Turn off any non essential devices, like serials ports and what not. Try reseting the IRQ configuration. I've heard of people having problems with Counterstrike and the Radeon. However, I can't remember a fix for it. If you haven't reloaded your system I would try to rid yourself of the Nvidia leftovers floating around in your system. I also would try reinstalling your chipset drivers. For some unknown reason (for me anyway) if I change cards, I always reinstall the chipset drivers. It just always seems to work better after. You could try sacrificing a virgin chicken over it too.

Well IT IS OFFICIAL. It sucks to be me and having a defunct Radeon 8500 card sucks too. So it double sucks to be me? The store where I bought the card claims they will RMA it if it is actually broken, not just because it doesn't 'Peform' as well as I would like, so I am stuck with this buggy, glitch-plagued, gremlin-infected hardware that was produced by the blasphemous and unholy union with DirectX. Funny how Nvidia doesn't "Force" you to install DirectX, just so your card will work. This is the underlying flaw in the ATI chipsets. Relying on the forked-tongued double-speakers from America's most notorious criminal organization M$ (they are immune to R.I.C.O., Bill G. cast a 16th level spell of "Corruptus Officialus Maximus" to ward off the justice department). Maybe if my video card could work without DirectX, maybe it would work with it as well. I also notice 3dmark scores tend to Favour ATI products, things that make you go, Hmmmm.

Okay, I hope the f**king a-holes at ATI are happy that I now know more about IRQ settings than Slick Willie knows about scoring Poontang. After a sleepless night of major computer sugery, the Subacute Necrotizing Encephalomyelopathy that had infected my system was successfully removed and seemed to have originated with the Radeon 8500. Now it's on a steady dose of liquid morphine and antibiotics to stave off reappearance of the infection. Will update once I have a chance to view the results of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging to be sure that the Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms don't have any negative long-term affects. Shit, not only did ATI make me have to learn about IRQ settings to use this card, but I had to go Medical School and become a Doctor so I could heal it. WTF is up with that?
