No High Speed Internet Access!!
Damn, I'm tired of Dial-up. I've been hearing that DSL is right around the corner for 4 years now. I've come to the realization that I will never have anything faster than dial-up while living where I am now. I must have entered my info to be contacted when it's available in my area 1,000 times on about 10 different providers!!! ARG!!
One of the main reasons I want DSL/Cable is XBOX Live. Xbox Live is supposed to be the $%!&. Only reason I really want that is because the rig I have now isn't fast enough to run the newer games, so I'm stuck playing CS, and DoD online. Sure I could settle for a satalite provider, but it costs an arm and a leg, and the speed fluctuates. I guess anything is better than the crap I have now.
Anyone still stuck with Dial-Up feels my pain.

Dude!?
It takes me 8 hours to download a 50mb file. I get 5kb a second! Plus, I go to school all day. I have very limited time to spend online.

I only get 5 - 5.5 kb/s, do the math. I can EASILY get 300-400. Theretically I can get 420mb max, i think.

Well, you should definitely be able to get satelite access, although I have no idea about pricing/speeds; and it just sounds kinda of expensive

Satelite
I've heard just horrible things about gaming over those satelite set-ups, the ping is WORSE than a 56K for a lot of people.
I'm in heaven with sub-100 pings for a change, it's sweet being on semi-equal footing online for a change!

Don't forget that with satelite many times when it is VERY cloudy you can get horrible service, if any.

Very good points guys, I didn't think of those. So I guess, you should scratch satelite of the list; I mean I have the TV, so I should of known better(it sucks in really bad weather). But on a similar note, I read that they have developed 'Broadband over power lines' which sounds very interesting, although it won't help no one any time soon.

I have 2 way Satelite.......it works great for everything except first person shooter's. And isn't really as touchy as my Sat TV. As far as download rates, I have many friends that run DSL and cable, and none of them can compete with the speed, of the people I know anyway. C&C Red Alert, Yuri's Revenge, and Generals it is perfect with, fast as hell. Medal of Honor, Unreal, and games on that level......forget it, you get shot before you know what happened, typical ping rate is 600 and up.
For those of us that live in the middle of no where........Sat rules when compared to dial up, as long as you aren't playing games like Quake III or Unreal.

Have faith.
To those waiting I just wanted to say that after 2 years of waiting me own self it really is worth the wait. But there is NOTHING that a phatty-pipe will get you that a 56K can't...it just takes a lot longer.

Have you thought about calling your local ISPs about about wireless service? This spring I begin beta testing a wireless service that offers three speed/price options. The speeds are 128, 256, & 512 with pricing starting at $30.00 for the 128 if you buy it for six month allotments. Luckily I've been with the same local dial up service since about 1995 and know most of the people who work there as we are all tech heads. This gives me opportunities to test anything new first . Considering I live in the middle of no where in the sticks surely this service would have to be offered elsewhere?

Cloudy weather bothers your satillite? heh takes a really bad thunder storm to knock out my satillite and that is usually after the cable down here has already been knocked out. But then again I live in a hole with no sign of civilized humans. Well maybe a couple thousand hillbillies. I guess the only thing I can give thanks for is they at least have DSL and Cable down here not that the techs down here know how to install it..

Satellite.....not here..
People here are scrambling for cable, its unbelieveable, no sat dishes, even though 5 military bases are just miles apart, growth and high tech is all peripheral to the core of the city. but nothing gets into the core except Adelphia cable, and they have total control...The dish industry can't make a dent...We are all anticipating WiFi, and hope it comes soon...Free internet in the center of the city, now that would rock...

Congrats with the broadband. If you didn't have it by now, I would have to suggest that you move.

I can understand the lack of broadband for those of you who live out in the middle of nowhere. But I'm living in the Denver Tech Area, and have no access to DSL, Cable or Wireless. I could get Satellite, but then I'm a Quake/Unreal player, and bouncing a signal to a satellite that's 22,000 miles up is going to take a significant amount of time. This REALLY sucks.
