Default Post Folding for Driverheaven???

Not at all sure where this belongs, I'm sure the mods will find a home for it though. I would like to know if there are any interested parties that would fold as a sub team for Rage3d and named something along the way of Driverheavenly Folding? Names not too improtant at this time, i just used that one as an example. Prehaps we could have a custom designed avatar as well? I'm sure many of you already fold and I think this would be a great way of getting the Driverheaven name out in folding. I'm going to be away for about a week, but I will check back tommorow to see how the status of this thread is going along. Mods if you have any ideas or if I'm stepping on some toes, just let me know. Let's show everyone the combined power of Driverheaven. Ideas and suggestions post here.

I don't fold and don't really know what it is, but I have a question anyway:

Why as a subteam of Rage3d?

Folding@Home is a distributed computing effort that analyzes how proteins fold (that is, assemble) in hopes of finding cures to any number of nasty diseases.

Indeed, though, why as a subteam? I know a lot of DH members are Rage3D members, too, but I see no reason to be sub to anyone. DH is a wonderful forum in its own right and it's the only forum that I frequent.

Well, seeing as how if DriverHeaven started its own Folding team, it would have virtually NO CHANCE of ever catching up with the top producing teams (Rage3D included). I think a DriverHeaven subteam would work, but ONLY for people who frequent both Rage3D and DH. For example, I fold for Team Rage3D, but I also frequent this forum. If a bunch of other people like myself wanted to get together and form a DH subteam for Rage3D, I'd be all for it.

People who do not frequent Rage3D, however, should simply fold anonymously. Seriously, it's for a great cause, and if you have CPU cycles to spare (and most everybody here does), you should put them to good use. This ain't no "find ET" crap... it's actually a USEFUL distributed computing project.

We have spoken about this before, certainly the team have discussed it in private already and there will be no folding at this time under a DH name, and certainly NEVER with any connection to Rage3d. Regarding the latter point there are alot of reasons why, and im not really going to start talking about them in public thread, I hope you all respect that, it would be unprofessional of me.

This forum gets over 4 million hits a week so on a broader scale I certainly dont feel we should be connected as a "sub" to any other site, alot more people come here from various sites than just Rage, certainly from the log files this is the case, but ....perhaps if the forum continues to develop and expand I will look into this at a later date as a totally independent entity, we will see if the forum continues to be a success, Driverheaven was only started on 1st May, hard to believe from the member list, posting and hit quota , but lets not forget that

I dont think i'd even consider having our own team until around 5000 members or so.

Okay, I respect that. I agree that DH is a totally seperate entity from Rage3D, but when I think of a subteam, I don't think of "sub" meaning substandard. I think of it as more of a seperate division or sorts. Seeing as how not everybody here comes from Rage3D, not everybody would fit in that division, which is why I suggested this could only really work for those who frequent both. But, if you don't wish to be associated with Team Rage3D, I'm cool with that. I'll just continue folding under my current name. No big deal.

The important thing is that people actually start folding. I don't care if they fold for a team or not.. just do it. It's for a good cause (cancer research benefits greatly from it), and it takes next to no effort. There's really no reason not to.

Default Post Nooffense guys

Hey Zardon & Cyborg I apologize if I overstepped any boundries, and I honestly don't look at Driverheaven as a substandard site. I'm like brc64 in that I frequent both this and Rage3d. I guess I figured so many familar names from Rage3d were here already combined with my new zeal for folding. Should have emailed you first. Me slaps head and hops around like a jackass. I just thought it might be a good idea. If you do ever decide to go ahead with folding on this site as an exclusive, I'll be the first to sign up.

Default Post i'd fold with DH to kick cancer in the ballz

consider this power math...
we have over 800 registered members at the moment. now i know that not everyone here would even consider folding for a DH team...so lets say that half of us would...i'm fairly confident that in those 400 or so members, at least half of them own or have access to more than one machine. if that were the case, and we started a f@h team today, we would be in the top15 within a week. (as a measuring stick...the google team only has 600 processors and they're sitting in 10th place)

You are right... a lot of people do have several computers at home.

There are an AXP, a thunderbird a PII 350 and about 10 other machines (including a sparc station and an RS/6000 from the earlier days) in my home. But it just simply isn't feasible to run them all at the same time. The electric bill will increase 200% over normal because you are first dissipating the energy in your house and then removing it via AC. In practice the most computers operating in my home are four: - PII350 (which acts as a router and therefore it would be bad to put a load on it other than what it currently handles) - Tbird 800, (available for use, but it is not on 24/7 due to hardware problems [read:fan issues]) - a PII266 laptop (for work) - and an XP1700. The last one is the only one suited for folding.

So despite the fact that a lot of people have spare computers lying around.. you have to consider the cost/time involved in getting them operational and running them 24/7.

After all, do you know how much power a RS/6000 eats up? ... its not pretty!

there has been no offense taken and I understand everyones opinions, we will always remain open for ideas and certainly open for improvement. Driverheaven wont be run like a hard ass site, ill make sure of that.

The point is, like everything that this site is involved in, it will be done when the time is right and I feel we will have enough members and interest to make it worthwhile. I dont want a half hearted approach. im sure you understand that. I also know there are at least 50 members who have emailed me about it, so its something im monitoring closely.

those of you from rage3d who fold, please continue to do so under that name, it is certainly for a good cause, and the importance of the team you fold under is a secondary and much less important concern.

thanks for the feedback and it is certainly something that wont be dismissed in the future, we have alot planned for the future if the site continues to get the level of interest it has gotten in the 6 or so weeks it has been open. several companies have shown an interest in buying driverheaven already... I cant see this happening, as I wish it to remain a site for the people, not run by a corporation. I dont want ads, pop ups or any form of advertising on this site at all. the hosting is paid for by me, so if you want to help, click the donation link.

certainly the 40 million hits it has received to this date has shown me alot of people are liking Driverheaven. We will keep bringing an information based site with help and driverleaks and more importantly we hope you all keep coming, without you guys, DH would be nothing

Well said m8.

Driver Heaven is a great site/forum run by the people, for the people - any other way it just wouldn't be the same

Ah, but you see, you need not dedidcate a PC to 24/7 folding to be helpful. The program works by running at the lowest possible priority level, so it really does ONLY take your spare CPU cycles. Even if your computers are only on for a couple hours at a time, that's still long enough to be productive. You won't top the charts, but you'll at least be helping. Just something to think about..

Yep I'm up for it already folding for another team..but I would change, if DH were to setup a team!

Benching team would also work nicely & compliment the Tweaking & overclocking forums

No will carry on folding for genome, at least I feel I'm doing something useful. Searching for little green dudes, that plainly aren't intrested in our backwards civilization, is not my cup of tea

This may have been re-discussed already in a newer thread, but I have just started f@h, and have access to usually 3 machines each of which can donate a few spare cycles. What is the current situation with starting a DH team? As a new "folder" I really dont know the ins and outs of managing a folding team, but it seems as though there are already a few members into it. Does our breach of 20,000 inspire a team?? If so, count me in!!
