I don't really like the way that was changed, now forum sections from the main forum index keep their unread icon unless every single thread inside is read.

Would be fine if there was a "mark all posts as read" function, or similar.

also, relating to MIG's and my posts earlier, i'm noticiting that after you read a thread with new posts regardless if you make a post or not, it is no longer in the userCP. i don't like that particular new "feature". i like the thread(s) to stay in my userCP until it has been cycled out due to no new posts.

In Craig's words today "it marks everything read after 10 days, or after you view that forums list of topics and then leave it classes them as read, sort of how it worked before, but it doesn't rely on the timeout setting which means it's more accurate for people who come and go throught out the day."

I guess thats the source of the confussion... just like CD's i don't see anything that even closely resembles that alteration.

I like the old style that simply goes day by day.

Because it was just changed over, there are no records of you having read your subscribed threads in the last ten days which is why they will appear for you again, this will happen for users who subscribe to every post they make and don't remove these subscripitions after they've passed usefulness. Once people start reading there topics and going about their usual routine the database will pass the initial phase and you will notice no difference, apart from more accurate tracking of what you have and haven't read. However that all doesn't matter as I'm going to change the setting back. Tho the current outdated setting will likely be removed in the upcoming versions of vBulletin so don't get too sentimental now where was I... ahh loose women and booze.

Thread/Forum Read Marking TypeThis option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.
  1.
Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.

Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
  2. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

The way most people on VBB based (and most other) forums are used to is the inactivity method, though it can be VERY annoying if the inactivity timeout is shorter than the time taken to look something up.

A couple of forums have switched to other methods which require a "mark forums read" action to dismiss any remaining unread threads - adavntage is that you can break off and come back without losing your place, disdavantage is when you forget to mark read when finished.

Same here...

More often it's the front page that won't load for me and the forums are quite quick. This is as far as the front page loads. And that is straight after a modem reset.

We're currently trying to track down the issues, my apologies to those who have experienced issues, and again to those that are still experiencing issues.
