That's why the big member number here is in a certain way bogus. If you look at the member list there are at least 1,000 members with 0 posts. I think some people might be afraid to post, for some odd reason. Any way it is pretty retard to join a forum and post 2 messages then split.

Should we implement some type of deleation period. If a member doesn't post within a certain amount of time after submiting his membership info, the membership is deleated?

Maybe the DH contests should require a minimum of 50 posts...but no spam

yeah, but 16,000!
Let them poke around for 72 hours or so. If they don't post give them the boot.

I didn't post for the first few days I was here, becuase I didn't want to waste peoples time with questions that always get asked. Once I got a feel for the forum (How explicit the language is, what people like to talk about, what we are not allowed to talk about ect...) I started posting, but these 16,000 members are just a little extreme. Someone should go through once a month and delete all accounts with zero posts, and once a year delete people with 11 or 12 posts (the people that came for contests and then left)

This seems like a good idea. This would also cut down on the number of entries in a contest. But, to a lot of people, "spam" seems to be a subjective term and many aren't clear about what constitiutes spam. (no matter how many times you try to explain it to them).
Another idea would be to start a "New Member forum" or something like that and make it where new registered users would have to make AT LEAST one post there to access other forums. Maybe that's a bit too much though.
My guess as to why alot of users may not post is because they are embarrased about their spelling/typing and/or grammer/language skills and don't want to post for fear of being razzed about it. Possibly others may feel outclassed by the intelligence on this forum and don't want to be considered dummies or something.
To all y'all users that haven't posted, don't worry about it, this is a friendly forum. Post something and you'll see. We're one big happy family here.

I think the admins of this site are running everything perfectly well.
Some people just don't have anything to say, or have hobbies they value more than tech forums.
Some are just lucky to not have any computer problems.
Leave them be.

I agree. I would be ejected from several boards around the internet if this was a common rule as I've found that reading the new posts usually answer any questions on problems I may have. It's not that I don't want to post, but why post anything if the question has been asked before and answered?

Hey I just sat as a vulture for close to a month and I am still here everyday even if I don't post much any more, but as for a kind of period were if your account is not active it gets deleted I kinda agree. I am an Admin at 2 other sites and we have IP tracking ware that could tell us if an account has been used in the past, so say if an account wasn't used for like uuummmm 3 months than I think it should be deleted.

But we can track the accounts and even if all the member does is visit then the account would still be considerd "Active" and wouldn't be considered abandoned or just a 1 time shot.

Naw, that really wouldn't be cool for quite a few reasons:
If you ever search my posts, I had 66 posts before 12/19/02 - thats it. There were spans in which my account would just look completely inactive, since I didn't log on to DH at all, but I most definitely like having my account now There might be other cases just like that, where the person becomes active after remembering that they signed up for DH...
Also, we do require registration to see the forums, that is why there are a lot of non-posting peeps out there - they might just want to read, and they can't without registering - and so what if they only read once? Why make them go through registration again just to read in our forums a second time some ways down the line?
" Another idea would be to start a "New Member forum" or something like that and make it where new registered users would have to make AT LEAST one post there to access other forums. Maybe that's a bit too much though." But why? What if they really don't like posting? What could they possibly discuss in there? I think that anything like that would make DH too elitist - you don't post, you aren't welcome.
"for those of you that are members but have yet to post ANYthing and are just looking around on the forums --- why? why dont any of you post anything? you only seem to post when you need advice or something like that. i was just curious. no need to put this in the FW" This is assuming that these people log on more than once or twice - they won't be posting if they aren't here. Also, I'm sure we have plenty'o'lurkers in these forums - nothing wrong with it, though if they do have something useful to add, I'm sure all of us would like to see them post
Finally... why would you want to delete inactive accounts? All forums have inactive accounts, it would simply skew our member count downwards relative to that of other forums... and it's not like they are burdening down our database, by any means - we have a nippy and newish server that's doing more than fine, so what would be the reason for deleting the accounts?

I think we should not delete any accounts. You never know who might be afraid to post but really like the helpful information. Some peeps dont post very much but are here checking out the info. We want to keep the place as freindly as possible and we certainly do like the member count growing but it doesnt matter 100%. I would like to think we have the best quality place here and that thru that we will become the biggest baddest place online

here we go again
this is about the 5th time ive seen this debate going on in here and ive answered it with the same thing everytime, and will continue to do so this time.
Driverheaven is a member only forum apart from the news forum and a few other sections, therefore people who wish to see the board, seek help, chat etc etc have to join up. There is NO way im making a rule that people have to post x number of times to maintain an account, nor am I deleting accounts for those who dont post or have been inactive for a period of time. Once you join it stands. To remove accounts or to force posting is elitist, unneccesary and ridiculous. People are welcome to view all they want as a member, and if they have something to say, then they have the freedom to post. If they dont, then thats fine.
What would happen if for example a guy went to all the effort of joining up, spent a week posting, then left for a few months for example with family issues, then came back, found his account, posts, input under his name all wiped and then had to re-register all over again? I for one would feel rightly pissed off with the site owners and probably wouldnt even bother joining up again. Driverheaven primarily is a friendly and welcome place to come and chat. everything ive tried to make it without the horrible, power crazed staff who delete, remove and do whatever they feel....
If other forums delete accounts after a period of time or force members to post, then thats their choice, but it certainly wont be happening here.
I really wish you guys would get on with posting rather than debating administrative issues on a constant basis.

Also, we force members so that any download links posted by the very good peeps such as patje for his "mobile modded" drivers actually login instead of deeplinking and stealing our bandwidth without credit.
Example, noobie site finds our "Cyborg/Omegadrive Drivers" and deeplinks without any credit. So they steal our site credit and our bandwidth whilst "stroking their ego" without stroking ours. And that just plain sucks.
