Just got curious after reading on many fora that motherboards have such good on-board audio, that a dedicated audio card isn't really needed.

Do you agree with this hypothesis, or is it utterly ridiculous what they are saying?

As for myself I think it is a good thing to relieve the motherboard of as much as possible, so a dedicated card will only be a benefit. And I think it can do a better job then on-board audio. especially for 5.1 or 7.1 sets. Not really sure about 2.0 or 2.1 sets.

Although the Z2300 I've got here are THX certified, and I doubt on-board audio will be able to handle this well, and a dedicated card is needed for this.

I recently installed a fresh copy of vista and now my soundcard isnt being detected. In the device manager its listed as "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and all attempts at finding and installing the proper driver have failed. I've tried drivers from Realtek, Intel, Sony and Sigma Tel to no avail. I've been scouring forums and support documents for an answer but i've yet to find a solution. I've spent two days working on this and i've got nothing to show for it. When i boot into Mandriva the audio works just fine so i know the soundcard itself isn't faulty. So if anyone has a solution or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm using the spdif out on the Audigy 2 ZS live drive which is wired to the SB0090. The sound works fine and using DDL i get Dolby Digital 5.1. Anyway the SPDIF on Creative Audigy in the Audio Control Panel, When testing supported formats it says "The device is being used by another application. Please close any devices that are playing audio to this device and then try again". Why is it that i can't use anything in the SPDIF interface of the card and only the speakers interface works?

I have to set in "speakers" to Digital Out Only, and enable DDL on Creative Audigy SPDIF to get DD 5Ch on the receiver. Anyway I want to be able to enable SPDIF in KMPlayer to get higher quality sound from DTS/ AC3 MKVs. AC3 Filter in KMPlayer says SPDIF (Disabled)?

THANKS

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and wanted to update my driver to the latest one from Creative that has Windows 7 support. Their installer uninstalls the old driver and reboots the machine, it then progresses to install the new driver (which never really installs). If I manually try to install it via device manager I get the error of "an interactive window station is required". I've searched all over the web for a solution to this and all I can seem to find is "Reinstall Windows". That is an awfully drastic approach to something that seems so trivial especially a plug and play driver installation. Anyone know how to fix this problem??

Windows update also fails to install the device, and there is no restore point to go back to.

I've run the Creative auto update as well. Nothing I try works, no matter what level I elevate the process to (Admin ect.) Safe mode doesnt work either.

Hi,

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum pro and I'm trying to get the Dolby Digital (AC3) from my PS3 to work using the SPDIF-in of my Audigy 2.

Here is my setup:
- I have the optical out of my PS3 connected to the SPDIF-in of the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum pro.
- Installed the latest drivers from Creative.
- PS3 is setup to output DD5.1, PCM Stereo, etc

PCM Stereo sound works great, but as soon as I play a DVD in the PS3 and it outputs DD5.1, I hear popping sound (yes I know, it's the DD5.1 stream being compressed in a PCM Stereo stream).

When I enable "Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In Decode" in the AudioHQ, I hear the actual DD5.1 sound instead of cracking/popping sound.. which is awesome.

Here is my problem: Whenever I play a DVD that outputs Dolby Digital, there is a delay in the sound of ~500ms. Image and sound are not sync'd. If I output a PCM Stereo stream, the sound is not delayed and everthing is ok.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this delay? Anyone been able get a setup similar to mine working ok?

Thanks!

I've searched through google cache, and 90% of the audigy related questions, especially those that have to do with pinouts, all seem to end up on these forums.

I own a original Audigy SB0090. I recently re-discovered the fact my videocard (Zotac 8800GT) has a SPDIF in connector. The last time I recall wiring a spdif (pin 17 or something) I would get full sound while in Linux, but no matter what I clicked in the windows panels (creative and windows utilities) I could never get it to pass the sound along in windows.

This is the pinout I used last time IIRC:

Creative Sound Blaster AUD_EXT pinout and wiring @ pinouts.ru

This looks like my connector, but mine is 'missing' pins 29/30
I'm assuming thats what they mean by KEY in the pinout chart

Now I find messages about bridging some pins, making the SB think a live drive is installed so it turns on all the SPDIF connectors in windows or something?

So my simple question is, I know linux will let me manually choose a spdif channel, so which output should I use so that I get sound in Windows as well (via spdif->gpu->hdmi out) and do I need to bridge any other pins or is it a matter of choosing the right spdif out?

Any help would be appreciated.

X-Fi Fatal1ty and Xbox 360 crackling and popping noises

Hi all,

I currently have my XBOX 360 connected via optical/TosLink to my Fatal1ty X-Fi (PCI). I'm also using a special driver (Youp-pax ... etc ...) that allows the onboard hardware to decode dolby digital, otherwise I wouldn't be able to run 5.1 surround sound with my XBOX 360.

I'm experiencing crackling and popping noises when I have the XBOX 360 set to Dolby Digital 5.1 and I haven't got the slightest clue as to what is causing it. Some games sound fine but certain frequencies cause it crackle severely. For example, in Mass Effect, during the cut-scene of the ship transporting to another sector, that loud noise causes crackling and popping. In Dead Space, I hear NO crackling in the front end, but in-game, I get crackling from the fire sounds in the background, when I stomp on the ground, fire weapons,... pretty much anything that is loud or goes through a range of frequencies. What's very odd is that if I set the console to Dolby Stereo, there is no crackling or popping whatsoever.
I've tried different drivers (with the special DTS/Dolby unlocker), I've tried different modes (Audio creation mode with bitmatching, etc.
As a note, this has happened on XP, and Vista.
As a second note, I don't experience any sort of distortion, crackling, popping or otherwise during normal gaming, music, DVD's, HD movies on my PC. DVD's and HD Movies play through the onboard Dolby decoder and it sounds fantastic. For some reason it just seems like the XBOX 360 is not happy with the optical/toslink connection.

Does anyone have any clues as to what I can try to resolve this issue?

Thank you.
