Its more like an action. Could little 'effect' plugs-ins be programmed as some type of object that could be wired like any other but would be simple logic gates, and maybe even take hooks from the OS? I'd love to be able to toggle between external speakers and headphones with a key combo.

Aside from the above, the answer is yes (for the most part). The processor's instruction set includes an instruction for boolean logic (ANDXOR) and thus could be used to make logic gates, etc. As for OS hooks, this is possible as well, but would require VC++.
