A noise gate is generally used to remove noise from a signal. It does this by basically clipping everything below the threshold (level) setting. A side effect of this action is that notes that gradually fall below the threshold level would get clipped the instant they fall below that level, which is usually not desirable.

The Threshold OFF setting controls the level at which the signal is clipped/gated.
The Threshold ON setting (I believe) is used to set the minimum level (above the OFF level) that the signal must be before it is allowed to pass through.

The A (ATTACK time) setting is used to fade the signal in, when it is above the threshold.
The H (HOLD time) parameter prevents a signal that gradually falls below the threshold level, from being clipped instantly. It starts clipping after the hold time.
The R (RELEASE time) parameter controls how quickly (after the HOLD time) the signal is clipped. i.e. Fades out the signal.

thanks!
as i am mainly guitar player, and a small part soft-synth one - I know what noise gates do, but usually i dealed with such with one setting for threshold.
anyway, your tips are very usefull for me, thanks again!
as a matter of fact i was wondering why the H(old) is measured with some strange values....and they are with "-" sign.
this thing confused me what this parameter actually do.

Yeah, I am not sure why the sliders and labels are setup that way. The threshold sliders seems to be backwards from what you would expect (i.e. max value (0) at the bottom slider position instead of the top), and I am not sure why negative values are used for the envelope times. In any case, once you figure out what is going on, it is not hard to use.
