To make good use of the DSP one doesn't have to be proficient in all of the material covered there, but one should be at the very least familiar with most of it. Then it is merely a matter of implementing what one needs into their own custom DSP.

The enigmatic DSP is not one's enemy; the enemy is a veritable lack of knowlege concerning the overarching subject matter. The DSP is not the end-all-be-all, but a tool.

If one doesn't know anything about sculpting, then a block of wood is just that (and it'll never be anything more than that). But if one understands sculpting, then it matters not whether the medium is wood, or stone, but the tools that are to be utilized/implemented.

Some people sculpt sound in iron, some in stone, some in horse hair, some in brass, etc. The DSP is a tool having the greatest common denominator across all audio mediums: pushing electrons through conductive pathways sandwiched between silicon substates.
