Well - the kX help file explaines the purpose of most of the (edit: 'essential' /edit) plugins.
Many become pretty self explanitory once you understand the DSP - as well as all the 'general purpose' uses... do you play midi files (reverb & chorus)?, do you play DVD (surround) or Games (directional Sound)?
And imo those plugins use DSP resources most effective for all the functionality they allow. But each person will use somethings more than others and would be willing to forgo some of the stuff - to make room to improve on the things they do.
Getting into more 'specialy' applications - plugins like the updated ProFx from Lex - may make better use of resources?? but again - depends on what you do.
The default DSP does a pretty good job of emulating the functionality found with CL/M$ drivers.
But kX trrue power comes from our ability to change the DSP config, to maximize the DSP resources for per application purposes. But yes, requires loading, saving configs - and understanding the kX DSP. (its not that hard - especially if you have used Synth Edit, Reaktor etc..)
When I do midi sequencing - the default DSP is no where near what I like to use for my DSP config. as a for instance... Same for ASIO recording.... and DVD watching....
Gaming - well default DSP is ok and is what I use in those more rare occasions.
