D-force and Montaver,
i'm not sure on this but i'd say your system may not reserved the same IRQ as the tweaker program does..
what's the program offer to enable and increase the IRQ priority?

IRQ 8 is reserved by Windows (with ACPI) to the System CMOS.

TuneXP simply adds the priority key to the registry. There is no messing around with other settings.

you're right about the IRQ8 is 'typically' reserved for real time clock, but in some system which's rarely found that the system is not reserved the same IRQ.

i'd suggest you make a note so that user will check before they apply this tweak, since this is a newly create key.

panging:

You are right that a few select systems don't have IRQ8 as the System CMOS/Realtime clock, but then selecting that IRQ for priority won't mess up your system. So, sad that Montaver has had issues, but i believe that it is an isolated case.

D-force,
your program is a useful tool.. and this's very common prob when ppl having an unforeseen prob what can i say, really pls keep up your good work.

---------------
for those who dont know here's how to check the reserved IRQ.
Open 'Device Manager',
hit the + in front of 'System devices',
R-Click on 'System COMS/realtime clock',
select 'Properties',
you should see the information at tab 'Resources'.

Try hitting F8 just before Windows boots, and try "last known good".

If the defragmentation doesn't start automatically, you should ALWAYS and i repeat ALWAYS run a defragmentation of your hard drive before even THINKING of rebooting.

Sorry it caused inconvenience. What kind of hardware configuration do you have?

And you do run Windows XP? If you run Windows 2000, you are running it on a system that won't support it properly.

Did you install anything in the same boot as TuneXP?

If it's the only way out, i suggest you reinstall Windows, or try getting into the repair console on the CD and type "fixmbr"

I'd say reinstall windows.

Now, to set things straight, all "Ultra-fast boot" does is execute a command that is well documented by Microsoft, and a defrag. It should, in no way, make Windows unbootable.

System Specs

I feel sorry for all these peeps having problems. I have had this particular Win XP Pro installation on my system since July 2003- and after using this program with all the tweaks I haven't had one problem, the only side affect for me is a slightly faster system! I also have XSetup so some of the tweaks were already on my system- but even using both programs I had not one bad experience with DH TeakXP..

To BWX232

I'm glad that you don't experience problems, and even though the last couple of pages have been dominated with support etc. i still hope (and know) that it's a small minority of users, that are having problems.

D-force,

if we delete the "Layout.ini" file in "Prefetch" folder and then call the "ProcessIdleTasks" from the command line (Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks), then the Layout.ini will be rebuilt with all the info (all .pf files) in the prefetch folder and then 'rearranging files' according to the newly generated Layout.ini.

but if we delete the Layout.ini file before running "Defrag C: -B"
then there wont be any arrangement of the boot files since the command will only rearrange files according to the current Layout.ini. the command line won't create a new Layout.ini..

i don't know which command line that the program executed nor any of these commands was used,
but if it's the "Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" then i'd suggest you have a note to user, make sure that they have enabled the "Task Scheduler" service since the task will only run when the service is started and running. this is just my opinion. and this has nothing to do with the system wont boot in the previous post..

Interesting- I remember once, (quite a few months ago) when my Task Scheduler service wasn't running because I had turned it off by accident, that my system ran pretty bad and I got allot of weird behavior from windows. When I turned it back on, everything was back to normal.

WinXP uses the "ProcessIdleTasks" to optimize itself every three days but it may not happen on some system since this task will only run when the system is deemed to be idle when the other things are also attempt to defer some work until the system is deemed to be idle as well... and it won't run on the system that has the "Task Scheduler" service disabled either.

I haven't had any problems so far. However, is a defragmentation process supposed to take place after the Ultra Fast booting process? I get a screen saying rearranging boot files and whatnots, and then after that, it'll just say "Do not reboot till defragmentation is complete." or something. I simply clicked ok and nothing happened.

Edit: My mistake, I saw a command screen pop out after that, with some defragmentation words. That's the defragmentation process right? Oh ya, thanks for the quick reply. I found those tweaks already .

RWX232/panging:

Thank you for your kind suggestions

What exact tweak TuneXP uses for the boot optimization process is not going to be revealed 100%, but i can tell you, that the ProcessIdleTasks is indeed a part of the multi-step optimization procedure.

I do recommend that users leave their Task Scheduler service on, but at the same time, i can't enforce it (but i will not add service control support for it). The tweak will still work to some extent even IF the task scheduler is disabled, since it's a part of a bigger procedure

syko86 :

Happy you figured it out

Well, i'm afraid it would have to be on your own risk. Parts might work, others might now. In any case, i'm afraid i can't endorse any use of the app on Windows 2000

I've got a slight problem here, not dealing with the app itself, but with the installer.

I execute it and it prompts for a second disk. It seems to be looking for a file called TuneXP.2

???

How do I know when your defragger has finished (for the ultra-fast boot process)? Right now it's just a DOS window with an analysis report, not really telling me if it's finished or not...

there're two defrag tools in XP, the command line tool (defrag.exe) and GUI version (dfrg.msc)
when running the command line defrag tool eventho the "DEFRAG" process is stopped but it actually invokes an OLE control "DFRGFAT" or "DFRGNTFS" to continue do the defragging in background. this makes it hard to tell when it's actually done.
it'll be easier to run a defrag with the GUI version if it's for a full defrag.

and if you also use a 3rd party defrag program make sure that you do not scheduled it to run at every x hour(s) or at anytime, two different defrag programs will not optimize in the same way, and may actually work against one another.

But just in case this becomes a problem, here are my specs.
