Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

Just got a Gateway MD7826u laptop with an ATI Mobility 3650 and was disappointed to find out neither of them are releasing updated versions of the drivers. Last update was 07/2008!

I have Windows Vista 64-bit and was able to install the modded Cataylst 9.6 software from ATi's site. For the most part, the computer runs fine and there are no problems in games. But 2-3 times, there have been random freezes in the opertaing system and I have to manually shut down the computer. I'm not certain that it is related to the modded drivers at this moment. But I'm not sure what else it could be. The computer never had this problem before.

Keep a watch on your temps, see if there is a correlation between lockup and too high a temperature.

What Tyrsonswood said.
I don't know if it can be done on mobile editions, but try the following if you can.
Open the CCC and enable ATI Overdrive. That will unlock the manual fan setting, set it to something very high and leave it at that. See if it happens again.

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

I've set LCD Overdrive to 200 "High." It was turned off.

Looks like I don't need it enabled. "Use LCD Overdrive to improve the quality of video displayed on an LCD, DFP, or DTV display."

I have a fan facing the computer on the desk.

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

I found this Vista gadget to monitor temperature:
http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDeta...5c0a&bt=1&pl=1

Looks like I need SpeedFan

Report: HD0 (86F), Temp1 (99F), Core 0 (91F), Core 1 (84F)

At least I get 60f/sec with the new Street Fighter IV Benchmark

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

Happened again! Every time has been during idle periods of inactivity.

I'm reverting back to the drivers on Gateway's website even if they are dated from 2008.

Yeah, see if that helps. Odd it's doing this at idle..............

Any other changes besides those drivers? New software, anti-virus programs, anything like that?

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

I've only been messing around with the display drivers recently, no other programs or drivers have been installed.

The temperatures went up to 110F after reinstalling the drivers posted on Gateway's website.

Did you try a complete cleaning of the drivers prior?

I didn't say anything about LCD overdrive...
Click on ATI Overdrive on the left (CCC advanced view).
Then click on the lock image to unlock it.
Then tick the box that says Enable ATI Overdrive and LEAVE IT ALONE.
Then tick (same place) the box (and only that one) that says Enable Manual Fan Control.
Then move it to 90% or something.
Click OK.
Does it work?

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

There is no option for Overdrive. The only thing I found close to it was LCD Overdrive.

I used TuneUp Utilities 2009 to clean the registry, but I doubt it removed everything related to the driver.

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

The weird thing is my older driver (8.513.0.0 - 7/8/2008) plays games like Gears of War and Crysis with the same performance and quality.

I was able to reinstall the older driver without any problems. I just have to wait until Gateway releases a new version.

So "upgrading" didn't help at all but seems to have caused the problems.... did you successfully go back to the old driver? Let us know how it's working.

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

Update: Computer froze up again two days ago with the original drivers posted on Gateway's website. Windows was setup up for turning off the hard disk after 20 minutes, so that might have been the problem.

Re: Random PC Freezes? Catalyst 9.6

Reinstalled Vista two times, same problems. Booted in safe mode for 2 hours, no problems. I wanted to know if it was possible for the hardware to become damaged using the modified drivers? I have until Tuesday to return this laptop.
