Aspire 1690 dhmodtool trouble

Right so i downloaded it, and im only running windows XP, but quite frankly i'm completely lost and unable to solve any of the problems im having.

When running any sort of HL2 related game or modification my computer more or less vomits on me.

I crash usually without error message, and the sound loops.

Beyond that the worst thing is when i try to use control+alt+delete usually the task manage can't even be initiallized or whatever that means. I don't know, i'm getting a new pc in december but for the time being, i could use a hand to avoid smashing this machine before me.

I downloaded the Rar file, and extracted to a folder on my desktop, ran the .exe and kinda just started guessing where i needed to send it, but either way it hasn't helped.

I also play my hl2 stuff off of an external harddrive, but i don't think that's the cause, however im currently about to test that as the cause of the crashes.
