ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 greyish picture with latest modded drivers
Cool utility I have some problems with my ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256MB) in Vista 32-bit though. I modded the latest ATI drivers yesterday with the new modder release, V3, and tried the newest drivers, but the picture was bad afterwards and the Catalyst program cannot start afterwards.
C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-8_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_50974
CL_52020.inf (B_52100)
DriverVer=07/27/2007, 8.401.0.0000
The picture is alot more blue and grey and my eyes had a hard time to watch the monitor. When I roll back to the latest HP nc8430 drivers (SP34710), the picture is a lot more warmer and easier to watch.
CL_42229.inf (B_42073)
DriverVer=01/18/2007, 8.333.0.0
Is there a way to copy these colour profile settings to the modded drivers or is this stuck inside the drivers? I haven't seen any way to change it in Vista elsewhere.
When I try to start Catalyst control center, I get errors in the event log that it cannot find components. Any ideas on how to get CCC working? I have chosen the default installation without changing the path or anything. I choose custom though, but didn't change anything.
Some other feedback:
1. Why does it use MSXML4? MS is retiring MSXML4 soon.
Microsoft XML Team's WebLog : MSXML4 is going to be kill bit-ed
You should use MSXML3 or MSXML6. There is a newer MSXML4 available as well, 936181:
Download details: Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
2. Why is Disable UAC available in the UI, when it is already disabled? Perhaps this should be greyed out if already disabled?
3. It would be nice if you could subscribe to the leave event of the text box "Driver location" and enable the "Modify" button if a correct path has been entered in the text box.
4. Perhaps the change memory dialog could be placed under the other modify in the main dialog? My video card has 256MB. I haven't understood the reason for this change? What happens if I choose 512MB? Will it fail or will it hijack another 256MB from the other RAM in the computer or will it use the maximum available? What happens if I leave it as is? Will it be 128MB then and will that mean that only half of my 256MB is used? Perhaps some autodetection of the current video card/driver in the system could be used as default when modding the driver instead if I have to manually change from 128 to 256 myself? It would also be nice if a path is already entered in "Driver location" that this path could be used to change this memory setting as well if in the default location.

For your feedback.
1. MSXML 4 is used in the program that makes some files into xml files so the program can edit them.
2. Now if uac is disabled then the checkbox before it is already checked.
3. i have to look into that.
4. See the other post about this.
I am not sure where the color profiles are stored and if it is in the driver or inf file.
For the ccc errors it looks like it is caused because of a missing file. I don't know if the error matters or not.

Thanks. The CCC error matters since it cannot start any CCC apps at all.

I have this very same issue. I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1536, c2d 1,66GHz, ATI Radeon x1400 128VRAM, Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. After I successfully install the driver using the modding tool, after the screen flickers, it turns grey. no errors, no problems, only the image is so bad. And it's not related to the latest drivers, I've already used versions 7.9, 7.8, 7.6 and 7.4, same problem. I don't think it has something to do with the colour profiles, I think it has something to do with the screen power management. Why I think so? Because at the time the screen flickers during the install, I hear that beep that also I am hearing when I am using normal drivers, and when I unplug the A/C cable the screen enters the screen power management state with the contrast and brighteness greatly reduced to preserve baterry life. But the brighteness and contrast are already at full level. Well, I suppose this may be the problem but maybe I am wrong. Anyway, CAN SOMEBODY HELP US? PLEASE? Thanks.

I DID IT! IT WORKS!
I used the mobility modding tool but instead of using the latest desktop driver from ATI, I downloaded the latest notebook driver from Dell (8.36, which is ok, compared to 8.31 on the fujitsu siemens driver page). The link for the driver is: http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R153383.EXE . I extracted the files, I used the modding tool to remove the restriction and voila, it works without that grey screen issue. However I did notice that the ATI icon in the taskbar did not loaded, although the ccc file was loaded. anyway, ati control panel is working, so I think it's nothing. I have to see if this version removed the problems I had with some games (I couldn't play older games based on DX8, like splinter cell 1&2, unreal 2, and even CS source, which is dx9 but HL2 works - strange). Anyway, I hope the developers of the mobility mod tool will find something so that we can update in Vista to the latest drivers using the desktop drivers from ATI.
