Sad Driver Cleaner causing system to crash

I recently decided to try installing the Omega drivers on my pc. I had at the time the factory installed ATI Mobility Radeon 7000IGP drivers. I read that after uninstalling the ATI drivers I should run Driver Cleaner. So I uninstalled the ATI drivers using the ATI uninstall utility (which was preinstalled on computer), restarted the pc into safe mode and followed the instructions for driver cleaner exactly as stated, including running the cab cleaners. I then restarted the computer as per the instructions but as soon as the Windows loading screen started to fade in the computer flashed a blue screen and brought up the black "Windows startup was interrupted" screen with the options Startup normally, last known good config etc. Everytime I tried to restart the same thing happened, even if I tried to start in safe mode or using last known good config. The only thing I could do was a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows.
As it was my first time using the program I thought I'd maybe done something wrong so i double checked all the online info and printed some of it out to refer to next time. Tried again (as above) and went through the driver cleaner process slowly step by step to make certain I made no mistakes and once again the same thing happened when I tried to restart and I had to reformat again.
I did try restarting before running the cleaner to make sure it wasn't the initial ATI removal causing the problem which it wasn't, the crash only happened after running cleaner.
The third time I tried I didn't use the cleaner at all, just used the ATI uninstall utility, ran registry cleaner, restarted and installed the Omega drivers and had no problems.

Any ideas why the above happened?

Also are there any issues I might run into having not run driver cleaner prior to installing the Omega drivers, and if so what can I do to prevent any problems?

WinXP Home SP2
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 (3GHz)
512Mb Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon 7000IGP
Old drivers: ATI AGP driver version 6.14.10.6430
Drivers now installed: Radeon Omega 3.8.221 (Catalyst 6.2)

Widkidone is an unknown quantity at this point

Step1: Goto your control panel and uninstall the ATI drivers and ATI Control Panel or CCC, if your using modified Drivers, then uninstall those as well.
Step2: Download Driver Cleaner
Step3: Reboot into safe mode, (hint: press f8 right before windows starts loading, hit it multiple times and choose "Safe Mode when it shows)
Step4: If u have modified drivers that include its OWN driver cleaner, use that FIRST, THEN use driver cleaner and clean all the drivers u don't need.
Step5: Use CAB Cleaner (in driver cleaner menu) only if you are going to covert back to the Catalyst drivers. Otherwise just clean the ATI and ATI CCC.
Step6: Remove files from recycle bin if their are any
Step7: Restart into windows. Once you have rebooted it your OS will tell you have new hard ware and will ask you to look for drivers. If you are going to install the Catalyst Drivers just cancel through. Otherwise just choose to search for the driver just this once and click the box in the bottom.
Step8: Download and install drivers andReboot.

JDPower which filters did you select? If you did select the ATI IGP filter then that could be your problem, because that removes your chipset drivers. If you only want to uninstall the display drivers use ATI and ATI CCC if CCC was installed.

Can't remember exactly which filters I used but thats a strong possibility. Everything I read said I needed to remove all traces of the old ati drivers and having a 7000igp I almost certainly ran that one (lack of understanding on my part obviously).

Will I run into any problems having not run Driver Cleaner before installing the Omega drivers? (doesn't seem to be any problems that I've come across yet)

JDPower i think you wno't run into problems, but when you uninstall and reinstall new drivers a more then it is better to clean it good, because else remains will stay behind.

So if you haven't had any problems now so far then it is good.

This is exactly the problem I'm having right now. In fact, I just installed and ran the cleaner about 8 mins ago. Guess what? I can't friggin' boot in my Windows. No safe mode, normal, command prompt, nothing.

The only way I'm able to type this post is because I was dual booting with linux (ubuntu).

Geh! I ran the ATi IGP filter without knowing any better. Ah crep.

Is there any possible way to get my windows workin' without reinstallation? Since I have access to the partition via linux, maybe I can copy the required files back into the system32 directory somehow...

Any help? Thanks.

Glad I'm not the only one, perhaps Driver Cleaner should have a warning window added to it for when someone selects the IGP filter?

Can't answer your question I'm afraid, don't think theres any other way but my situation was slightly different in that I only had Windows installed (and have no experience of Linux at all). I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to give a more definite answer

JDPower the problem is that people do not read the helpfile. In the helpfile there is a section filters and there is a warning for the ATI IGP and also a list of what filter to use when. I hope people will read that more.

Mugen if you can boot with linux then goto the Driver Cleaner folder and look at the log file. There you can see what files are deleted. Try to copy back those files and i think it should work again. What you also can do is boot from the window cd and goto the repair console. In there you can also copy the files back.

So best is to boot with linux first and read the log file and then try linux to copy the files or windows repair console to copy them back.

I'm not trying to pick fault, and for the record I read the help file several times cos I was scared of messing up and still made the mistake. It just makes sense to me to have a warning pop up when that filter is selected, especially when the consequences are so serious. Reading the help file does not necessarily rule out someone making a simple mistake when using the program for the first time.

Thanks for the information Spike, I'll go ahead and try that right now.

I'm going to have to agree with JDPower on this one. A warning of some type would definetly be useful. Unfortunetly you can't expect everyone to read the helpfile. Someting that can completely screw up your PC should have more warning to it. I mean I can't even login into command prompt safe mode it's that bad. For users without a second OS it would be a horrible situation. Guess I'm lucky I can at least read my NTFS disk using Linux.

I'll go ahead and try your method. Thanks.

JDPower and Mugen i will look how i can improve that. I will add a bigger warning in the helpfile and see if i can add some sort of warning in the program.

As far as i see it then there are only 2 files
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\atisgkaf.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\atiide.sys

Copy those back and it could be fixed it think.

Spike you have any idea where I could get those files? It's pretty easy to find the dll's online but the .sys are posing a trouble for me.

Thanks for all the help.

Does anyone have the atiide.sys file on their PC? Could someone zip it up and send it to me? I really need it, I tried a windows repair install and my PC is still screwed. Keeps asking for that file but I can't find it anywhere online.

Yay.

I got someone to download the IGP drivers from ati and extract them for me (since you can't open .exe in linux) and they packed and sent me everything. I managed to find them. So happy. Now I can attempy to run the xp repair again and this time when it prompts me for the drivers I can choose them.

Also, thanks for the offer.
