Stock heatsink was used in this guide as shown with thermal pad shown also, As far as the voiding of warranties yes ...using anything other then the thermal pad included with the stock heatsink according to AMD will void the warranty, because of this simple reason, to many people were just slopping the thermal paste on the cpu's by lack of knowledge, and frying them, they are less worried about the 64 bit chips because of the covering over the core.

and why would it void the warranty? as far as i know, warranty is only voided when OCing occurs.

Usually they give depending on where you purchase from a 30/60 day warranty, I have seen some that give a year's warranty though with OEM cpu's. But the warranty is not valid with AMD as a retail box cpu would be (3 yr warranty on retail box)

through my work, we manage to sell OEM AMD processors with a 1yr. manfacturer warranty. Depending on the circumstances, we will RMA the processor and the customer will get a new one 4-6 weeks later.

Maybe another tip to include:
When using a videocard which needs a molex powerconnector (like R9700Pro, FX6800 and so) it's advisable to use a seperate rail for only the videocard and so not to connect any other devices to that specific string

well newegg has an odd policy on not accepting cpus back... well its not odd its understandable... people forcing processors in place and such. but still sometimes u get those retailers who are jerks about it.... i think unless i had a biz i would only buy retail for now

retail is alright. All you get is a HSF and 3yr. manufacturer warranty vs. CPU itself, and 1yr. manufacturer warranty. stock cooling sux. I wouldn't spend less than $25 on cooling. i'm really looking at a thermalright sp-94 right now to keep my scottie cool and get 4.2 !
