Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

Read The Review Here
_______________________

The model on test today is possible the best model they produce today, it has a large 160GB hard drive (twice the 80gb model released earlier), a 10inch screen with 1024x600 display and an almost full sized keyboard (around 92%). To top all this, we have bluetooth, wifi, 3 USB ports and VGA out.

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

They have improved vastly. the 701 was a fugly looking piece of kit, this is very nice.

Atom is a good CPU actually, such low power requirements, Id say 8-9 hours out of a 9 cell would be possible.

Good review Z.

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

I actually bought one of these 10 days ago. One of the best buys I've ever made. I've even installed Vista on the thing (also 2GB of RAM, as the review says it's dirt cheap these days) and it flies

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

I held one of these briefly and was surprised that it felt pretty sturdy, and the look is certainly much improved. After typing and surfing a bit on the LG equivalent I still feel the need for 100% sized keys and web browsing at 1024x600 pixels felt surprisingly cramped. But I guess a Netbook is supposed to be a Netbook. The upcoming dual Atom's won't affect the power consumption much, seing as how little power the CPU itself draws compared to the motherboard.

Personally I'm leaning more towards something like the Eee Box, an ultra portable desktop. But it needs 1080p capability just out of principle. Asus, shake hands with AMD.

Funnily enough after the review I did the same thing just to try it out. With 1 GB of ram its a bit sluggish, but once I increased to 2gb it really is very nippy. Had a few issues with the ACPI and the volume control FN buttons not working right but i got a modified ACPI exe on the EEE forums.

Yup, after planting the modified files from the Eee forums everything just works. In the first 2-3 days I had it I also had Ubuntu Eee there, which is an Ubuntu distribution with the Eee in mind. Also a great operating system which just works on the Eee.

Plus, 720p movies actually work on the Eee. You just need a fast decoder - namely CoreAVC.

Yeah ive heard that said, and I actually tried that codec for quite a long time before writing the review (they supplied a full copy to DH). Ive never been able to get perfect playback with 720p (it worked with things like animated cartoons etc, but not full 720p movies) and even the asus rep I deal with said it wasn't possible. I will play around again with coreavc professional and get back to you guys...

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

Ok, I did manage to get 720p working but only with a specific setup.

Here is what i did.

2GB of ram (not sure if it works with 1gb - id say it should in XP, vista possibly not).

Windows Vista

www.coreavc.com pro codec

Windows Media Player classic (frames skipping in VLC and windows media player and almost all other players ive tried).

HD MKV files play

Review appended with:
EDIT: After going live, we managed to get 720P content working by the following procedure. By this stage we had upgraded memory to 2GB and had installed Windows Vista, but the same method should work fine on XP with 1GB.
Remove any other .264 codec packs. Install CoreAVC Professional Codec (1.85 although 1.8 also works), available from http://www.coreavc.com/install. then download Media Player Classic This is seemingly the only player that will not skip frames with most content.

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

The fact you can play 720p videos on it (with that guide Z) made me pick up one today. I download a ton of MKV tv shows and like to watch those on the move.

I can confirm it works, and I also put vista on it and added another gig of ram. What a beautiful machine, have to say, doesn't look cheap and tacky like the majority of netbooks out there. The display is very good too, very vibrant colours.

Thanks DH, this tool is going to prove very good for me on my frequent Train journeys.

It might be fun for someone to test the Media Player Classic - Home Cinema player, that comes with an integrated decoder as well as numerous new features.

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

I'd love to purchase one of these for my wife (stop her cluttering up my pc). I'd probably buy one for myself but after playing with the new one in a store the other day I realise in it's current form it would be nigh on impossible. Being of the large hand type humans I found I could type ok but the trackpad buttons on the edge of the chassis were extremely uncomfortable to use. Oddly one of the older models with the buttons set half an inch further forward was much more comfortable. Maybe it would just take a bit of time to adjust.
On a seperate note i've never had any hands on experience with Linux but I was very suprised at how accessible the version is thats shipped on the eee netbooks. It's definitely something i'd love to become more acquainted with.

Re: Asus EEE PC 1000H (160GB HD)

I sympathise if you let your girlfriend/wife on your home computer, thats a scary thought !

I like the 10 inch model, the other ones have keyboards that are quite uncomfortable, but I agree with the review, for any kind of long term use a mouse is still a necessity.

Like the black machines a lot more than the white ones.
