DH Review: Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme & IFX-14

Read The Review Here

Thermalright is a company with a long history in the enthusiast PC market and they have created some of the best, hardcore CPU coolers over the last decade. Today we will have a look at two of their greatest CPU coolers, the Ultra-120 eXtreme and the IFX-14. The Ultra-120 eXtreme is an updated version of the extremely successful Ultra-120, while the IFX-14 has quickly became famous because of the monstrous size.

Wow, that's a beast! I wonder about that "backside cooler" part of the IFX-14, for its size and with only passive/incidental airflow, surely it's contribution is insignificant compared to the main heatsink?

Pure gimmick, surely?

The IFX-10 is meant to keep the backside of your motherboard cool and eliminate the possibility of a 'warm spot' developing there. While it won't affect the CPU temperatures by much, it helps keeping the overall cooling system more stable. I wouldn't call it 'pure gimmick' but I don't think it would be really useful for anybody but extreme overclockers. Only then the possibility of a warm spot at the backside of the motherboard (caused by the high voltage, current, power consumption) could be a factor in need of attention.
