DH Review: OCZ ReaperX DDR2-800 4GB & Kingston Hyper X DDR2-1066 2GB

The DDR2 memory market currently has two major options for consumers using the latest CPUs. Consumers can either go for 2 GB kits of speeds up to 1066MHz, which are priced quite reasonably or 4 GB kits of DDR2-800 with tighter timings. What difference does this make to the latest CPUs and which option should the consumer go for when seeking the best performance?

Today we are pitting 4GB of OCZ’s ReaperX DDR2-800 against 2 GB of Kingston HyperX DDR2-1066 in an attempt to answer the above question.

A very very good review . I think that Kingston HyperX has been vastly overlooked in the past and since i have the mentioned kingston ram i can say that it is very very good

I'm betting you CANNOT get 8GB of OCZ Reaper in a mobo. Why? The Reaper heatpipes are too wide for the sticks to be placed next to each other, so they must be inserted with a blank RAM slot between them--you only get to use 2 of 4 slots so you are limited to 4GB--which is all you can use for Vista 32-bit/86 as its RAM usages tops out at something like 3.3GB. Vista 64-bit can handle 8GB--but probably not with the Reapers due to the issue above.

welcome neutron, & good point on possible install problem. maybe veridian will check that out if he still has the modules.
& thx for the review guys. i like that you didnt do another 'head to head' test of similar modules that end up(to no ones surprise) performing identical.
while im a big ocz fan, those kingstons look like nice buy.

Its a tight fit but it is possible to install the sticks side by side. Heavily dependant on the motherboard though. (Some have more space between slots than others). For example, the ones i have around me atm i think 2 would work ok and 4 would be a struggle.

Another option would be to buy the slightly different 4-4-4-15 modules and use them, they work fine as 4x2gb in the Asus Striker Extreme board. I know that for sure. OCZ Technology | Products | Memory | OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Reaper CL4 4GB Edition
