DH Review: Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 Case

Read The Review Here
______________________

In my time as a hardware reviewer I have never actually reviewed an enthusiast orientated Cooler Master case; I have used them but never been in the position to take a proper look at one. Thinking back, one of the most impressive would have to be their Wave Master design which looked fantastic, specifically compared to other cases of its time. In addition to this it had a few good features which made using it as the basis for a review system easy. It would also appear that high end Cooler Master cases are well made because one of my friends still uses his Wave Master, 4 years after it was originally launched, and it is still in perfect condition.

The latest high end case to be launched by this Taiwanese company is the Cosmos 1000 and it is this unit which we are reviewing today.

Nice review and nice case, finally somthing in the hard drive mounting department to make me maybe wanna switch from my ANTEC Sonata case. (Which mounts in a similar, smaller non surrounding bracket) Cpla questions about the HDD enclosure area. How were the HDD temps being eclosed in those "drawers"? Also the bottom intake fan, is it possible to aim the airflow to the HDD area as no front intake and HDD fan are present? Is it possible to mount a fan in the front of the case infront of the HDD area? One last question about the HDD area, is it possible mount and wire up the HDDs with only one side of the case memoved? Can the wiring be connected with only one side being off or do you need to remove both sides of the case to get to the wires of the HDDs.??

Questions, questions, questions...

1) The HD temps were fine, the case uses negative pressure to draw air in next to the hard drives. At the moment (with stock cooling) my temps are:

mobo 36
CPU 36
GPU 60
GPU ambient 49
HD1 40
HD2 39

2) If you were unhappy with the cooling of the drives i the cases default configuration it is possible to move the main intake to sit on the drive "cage". Cooler Master provide instructions for this on their website.

3) Hard drives can be installed without the back panel being removed although it is a bit awkward. As the sides pop off with ease there really isnt any need to do that, no screws need removed to take of either panel.

Also, i just ran PCmark to see what impact it had on HD temps. CPU went up to 52, mobo to 38 and both drives in my case sat at 40c throughout. Great case

Nice review Stu

Didn't have issues with that 8-pin 12V for the CPU?

Got this case... have had it appart and fiddling with alot of it..

trust me guys, aside from being mostly please with the coolermaster centurion 532's as my main build case (everything on it is extremely conveinent and it works great cooling wise and upgrading wise)....

by far, the cosmos 1000 is best case i've EVER EVER had my hands on..

i plan on modding it with a bit of airbrushed decalling... something soft and likely blue in flavor...

absalutely love the amount of room you get to fiddle around in it, plus it's a nice step in the right direction to get rid of those damn floppy bays... giving room for the hardrive space..

And yes, it's Jumbo.... i was a bit concerned about the intake from underneath the case, but it seems fine, just make sure you keep scrap papper and crap away from it, last thing you want is a peice of papage getting sucked up and blocking the psu's intake...

Believe me, when there are components in this there is no way it is moving without handles.

Shike is on a distinguished road

I got this case recently for my next PC build with a rebate to snag it for $150.

I've had cheapo cases, I've worked on Lanboys, owned a Lian-Li, and before a car crash had an Antec 900.

After playing with this case, I must say it's the best one I've seen yet. If the Cooler Master we loved was a former shadow of itself after the original designers left, with this case I say we don't need them.

Currently I'm debating on how to hook the intakes to flexible piping to create a shroud just for my CPU HSF. I could only imagine the results would be good, and with dust filters it would stay perfectly clean. Decisions decisions.

*BTW, definately move the shroud on the bottom to over the HDDs, it drops their temps by 8C. Instead mount a regular 120mm with grill to the bottom, as it has holes to screw one in where the HDD area does not.
