DH Review: North Q Giant Reactor 1kW
Read The Review Here
________________________ Today we will take a look at a power supply unit made by NorthQ, a Danish computer components manufacturer. We have tested several NorthQ products in our labs during the past few years, most of which were power supply units. While these PSUs always were above average in terms of performance, quality and pricing, they were not powerful enough to please the most hardcore gamers and enthusiasts who always demand, nay require excessive, perhaps even unnecessary amounts of power. For NorthQ to appeal in this market, they decided to add another PSU in their products line-up; the Giant Reactor. The Giant Reactor can output exactly 1KW (1000W), enough power to feed a ludicrous number of components. Nonetheless, raw power is nothing by itself so we will put it to the test and see how clean and stable the output of this behemoth is. |

You'd be surprised if you knew how many PSUs look exactly the same as the Giant Reactor internally... The Silverstone Strider 850W and 1kW units are just one example. I can remember more but I'm not sure if they use the exact same components too. Because the power supply looks like another in terms of components and design, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the same. I had experience with the Strider too, and it was a true 850W unit. Which means that having it output 900W would cause the unit to shut down after a few seconds. The Giant Reactor worked at 1kW for several minutes, so even if the rectifiers/choppers are not redesigned, the overload protection switch is. The changes are usually on micro-electronics scale and small components, I have seen a 400W PSU and a 650W PSU sharing the same design and most of the components but each worked exactly as they should. Technically, the 1kW strider and the 1kW Giant Reactor should be the exact same PSU though, it is safe to assume that both of the companies use the same manufacturer for their units. Many thanks for the kind words guys. ![]()
