Low on virtual memory

When I leave my PC on for long periods of time (>1week) I get Windows messages (I'm using win2K) about running low on virtual memory and the paging file size is being increased. When I check with Task Manager, mixer.exe is showing around 300MB.

Is there an adverse interaction with the kx mixer causing memory to leak? If I use End Task on mixer.exe everything returns to normal. But does it need to be running at all, or have I not installed kx properly or something?

mixer.exe doesn't sound like a file in the kX package, though I haven't used it for a while (no card) so maybe I'm mistaken. Check for trojans/spyware. You might also want to set a high minimum level for the swap file so that its size does not have to be regulated too oftenly, wich in itself is detrimental to system performance. Set minimum to 512MB or 1GB if you have some drive space to spare. Control panel > system > advanced > performance > advanced.

The kX mixer application is kxmixer.exe, not mixer.exe. If the program giving you trouble is actually named mixer.exe and not kxmixer.exe then it may be something malicious, or at least something else.

yes, I'm aware that kxmixer is the one for this package. Mixer.exe is the Windows default mixer application. My question was whether it should be running at all if kxmixer is running, and if it is whether there is an interaction between them (both fighting with each other somehow) with the result that mixer.exe leaks memory.

In the versions of Windows that I've used, the Microsoft mixer app is sndvol32.exe, not mixer.exe. If you really have something running called mixer.exe then I would be very distrustful of it. In any case, you shouldn't need or want the standard mixer running because it doesn't do as good or complete a job of controlling the sound card as the kX mixer.

Actually you are right, mixer.exe is not part of Windows itself but part of the C-Media on-board audio install (machine is a Shuttle SS40G). The on-board audio was already disabled in BIOS, but I've now removed the mixer.exe in the HKLM/.....CurrentVersion/Run section of the registry and I'll reboot and see if that cures the problem. Thanks for pointing this out.
