KX Mixer/Manager: No ToolTips PopPups even when "Tooltips Enabled" chosen
Hi,
This problem is with version 5.10.00.3531 - debug Even when the "Tooltips Enabled" option is chosen from KX System Menu ( Tray Icon ), the popup tooltip display doesnt show up on any of the Mixer subcategories. I tried disactivating and re-activating the "Tooltips Enabled" option, but still no Tooltips to be found on the mixer. It is like the tooltips are always disabled and that option in the menu is pretty useless. On the DSP, i can see the toolTip that displays the names of the "IN/OUT" and even if the "Tooltips Enabled" option is Un-Selected, i still see the tooltip. You guys might need to check out your "Tooltips display flag" and the logic behind it :-) |

tooltips are working fine here, version 3531, in all mixer subcategories (using windows xp with service pack). They even show up in my language (brazilian portuguese).

the 'tooltip' flag should work correctly
however, you may need to re-open kX Mixer window for the changes to take effect if you are still experiencing problems, unload kxmixer, run 'regedit', open 'hkey_current_user\software\kx\mixer\tooltips' and delete it; re-start kX mixer /Eugene |

Still no tooltips
Hi again,
I deleted my tooltips registry key ( which was set to one btw ) and restarted the KSMixer App, i even restarted Windows, but no go. It still isn't working. I am also running on XP Service pack1. I am running WIndowsXP Plus with a Theme. Maybe this is what causing the problem , i will check for that later. Btw, the tooltips are supposed to appear whenever you "hover" over a control in the Mixer too..right? In the "Kx DSP" Window when i hover over the "X" button it pops up the "close" tooltip, same for the "Minimize" and "info" buttons, but in the "Kx Mixer" window, no tooltip. Is it supposed to show toolTip in the "Kx Mixer" window? ( at least for the close, MInimizer and info buttons ) |

first, unload the mixer
second, tweak the registry value (btw, it should be '1' or 'unpresent' for 'enabled' tooltips) then, restart the mixer yes, the tooltips should be shown for most kX controls you may need to wait for 1 sec /Eugene |

...Still no tooltips
Hi Eugene,
I did the steps in exatly the sme order that you recommend, including unloading/loading of the application. I even restarted Window. But the only Window that will show ToolTips is the "DSP Mixer" and even if the Show Tooltips option is disabled, it will still show them. Weird behavior, but it is not that bad of a bug. It is mainly more annoying for beginner ( if they have it ) becaus they will constantly look in the help file to see what controls are. Edit: Just tried 3532, the exact same behavior, but it is logical, you guys cannot solve a problem you cannot reproduce :-) Last edited by Koolyo; Apr 18, 2003 at 01:32 PM. |

what is your Windows version? if it is XP, could you pls test the mixer with 'classic' Windows GUI? were you able see the tooltips before 3530? (kX DSP tooltips should be always available...) btw, do the tooltips show when you launch 'kxsetup.exe'? /Eugene |

Nop
Hi Eugene
>>what is your Windows version? Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1a >>if it is XP, could you pls test the mixer with 'classic' Windows GUI? I just finished testing it now. I restarted windows after switching to "classic" windows GUI. Still no go. I double checked for the Menu entry "Show ToolTips" to see if it is check, and it is. >>(kX DSP tooltips should be always available...) Yep, these are the only tooltips that work on my system, regardless of the "Display tooltips" flag. >>btw, do the tooltips show when you launch 'kxsetup.exe'? Nop. Why don't you guys use the same code for the "Kx DSP" ( the one that works on my system ) for all other tooltip. Is there a technical/architectural reason? |

(btw... (just for case) do you have something like xp_AntiSpy installed? i remember that riv@nvx reported exactly the same problem with tooltips (or that antispy have right such option like "disable baloon tooltips"... whatever)) - e.g. as i understand he does not see only "baloon" ones, right?

Heh, I post a long detailed report about one 'bug' that turns out to be a hardware limitation (crappy resampling code that's unable to be reprogrammed), and throw a few extra minibugs in at the end, and they went ignored? Weak.
I too have the 3531 tooltips bug (3530 was fine). Windows XP non-SP1 (but w/every other update), Windows Classic theme (non-Luna). I'm not running any software that would interfere in any way with any tooltips in any applications. From my original post: Quote:

Oh no!
Hi,
Yes, i have diabled the balloon Tips on purpose so that the stupid and ugly "Your Harddisk D is almost full" doesnt show every 5 minutes in my System Tray. But this is an Explorer ( the application ) setting, not an OS Setting, so, it should not affect how other applications work. Unless there is a bug ( feature? ) in the MFC class KxGUI manager uses to display the tooltip window or the Kx programmers _explicitly_ chose to check against the registery value "EnableBalloonTips" ( action that isnt justified and shouldn't be done and which i doubt they did), one thing is sure, this value is being queryed at the start of the KxMixer by it or by some loaded on startup DLL. IMHO, the display tooltip code should be the same for everywhere else as in the Kx DSP, but with the bility to be toggled On/Off or remove the explicit check for the value of that regKey. I am not willing to make the sacrifice to re-enable the show "Balloon" tips again just for the sake of some extra help when navigating the Kx GUI, but for those who are, here is the regkey that you can switch on/off ( 1/0) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced "EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000001 Edit: Here you go, i tested and it worked, i will be resetting it to 0. Btw, you have to restart the Kx Mixer after reg mod. Last edited by Koolyo; Apr 19, 2003 at 01:42 PM. |

Hmm.. why, prior to 3531, did that setting not affect the kX tooltips display? To be honest, I liked it better when it didn't. Re-enabling XP Balloon Tooltips (something I disabled nearly immediately after installing XP a year and a half ago) does fix the problem though.

Update:
After a little bit of investigation, i found the culprit code responsible for reading the reg value "EnableBalloonTips" in XP's commcon control DLL "comctl32.dll". Since this dll's API is used by most apps, including KxMixer that is the one responsible for reading the registry value at the start of each program using it. Probably that Kx is using one of these new "ToolTips" style, proper to XP, that is managed at the core level by the comctl32.dll and that is proxied by KxMixer through KxGui Manager which uses MFC classes. And the primpory condition for the "new" ToolTip style to appear is for that registery "EnableBalloonTips" key value to be set to 1, even though it is found under "Explorer"'s branch in the registery, it is not proper to explorer only. Microsoft did it again.
I will keep u posted on any findings i make. Btw: I _really_ hate these balloon tooltips poping everywhere in XP if that registry value is set to 1 |

> so that the stupid and ugly "Your Harddisk D is almost full" doesnt show every 5 minutes in my System Tray I would say that if you don't want to see "your hard disk is fool" then you should disable only that tooltip ("tray->properties->blablabbla->alwayshide") but not EVERY baloon in the system... also this is relaited to other weird windows "kid-notify" tooltips - most of them can be disabled individualy...

Still investigating...
Hi Max,
And thanks for your reply. The Bubble ToolTip also shows on windows controls themselfs ( like when you choose turn off your computer ). Btw, why did you guys go with the bubble type, which is dependant on that registry key, instead of the one applications usually use and which is also found on the Kx DSP pannel? purely esthetical reasons? Edit: I am still investigating on that registery key... Last edited by Koolyo; Apr 20, 2003 at 02:51 AM. |

Aha!
>> purely esthetical reasons
yes /E ----------- Can you guys then put the "Use XP-Style ToolTips" as an option in the system tray instead of it being "forced" upon us? And apply this also to the Kx DSP, so it uses the same tooltips style as the one selected. So that way, the ToolTips appearence will be uniform from one window to the other ( instead of having 2 different styles like now for one application ), and for the people that dont want to activate the bubble tip all over the place, they can still see the ToolTips, but in the usual style, like the style of the Kx DSP now

I can live with that!
>>concerning 'Use XP-style tooltips' well, an 'undocumented' registry key perhaps?
>>such as 'Software\kX\Mixer\DisableXPToolTips' -- especially for registry hackers Hourraaa!! I vote for that! Eugene, let me take a moment to thank all of you guys in the development team for that *GREAT* application and for you excellent support. Trust me, i have been in the software development buisness for more than 10 years and i know how hard it can become to manage/develop/track and support a project such as yours. Only one word come to mind ( it is a french word, which can translate to "Hat" or depending on context "Congratulation for your excellent work ) Chapeau! Edit: Heck, i might end up coding sometime a 'small and tight' Win32ASM application to set/configure all these Kx "undocumented" settings
