6600 GT scores better than 9800 Pro..?
Just curious to see how many if any of you have this 6600 GT card and what your experience with it is. I am in the market for a new video card and since funds are limited these 2 still look like fairly good midrange options. Both can be had on Newegg with versions around the $240 range.
I did some looking on Futuremark's website and did some project searches and it appears that the 6600 GT best score was at 10400 and the 9800 pro was at a score of 8224 in 3dmark03. Now, I realize that these cards were probably modded, both of them, but a 2000 point difference really seems to be a fair amount. Also the 6600 bested the 9800 in 3dmark05 by around 700 pts at 4014 and 3336 respectively. However in 3dmark01 the 9800 spanked the 6600 by 29150 to 20821. I understand that the differences between the numbers are based on the individual PC specs and all that, but I assume that the top scores are going to be held by people who understand what kind of equipment, drivers, etc are necessary to achieve these scores. Do these numbers reflect what you all have seen in the "real world" out there? Do you recommend the 6600 over the 9800? I believe that ATI has better driver release frequency and such, but the 3d03 numbers have me interested.

While even substantial differences in 3DMark scores doesn't necessarily translate to real world performance, yes the GF6600GT's are the better buy right now. The ATI X700's hasn't appeared in AGP form yet. On the other hand, seeing as you have a R9700pro you might still be able to wait a bit longer. The performance step up to a 6600GT is still not quite huge with most games, and perhaps you would also be looking to get a PCIe motherboard next year.

I just got a new MOBO about 3 days ago, and have yet to update my sig. I picked up a MSI Neo2 and a 64bit 3200+ so I will not be upgrading I don't think in the near future. Is ATI planning on releasing the X700 in AGP form? Because i am having serious issues with my vid card atm I think that it is pretty much dead. I may be able to send it off and have it worked on, but the problem is that I am having issues with the cards electrical connections and producing a corrrupt image. I can even get it to produce a stable image anymore, I touch the electrical plug while connected and it makes different colored boxes and stripes appear. I am planning on doing some more experimenting with that, but at the moment I would like input on the 2 cards.
Thanks, Ir

I think ATi is going to wait and see how the sales of the PCIe version goes. But they will most likely release it in AGP, I hope.

Ah I see. If you need a card right now then for what I can see the GF6600GT is the one to get today in its price range. The X700 appearing for AGP might still be on the rumor side though I would be surprised not to see it, so in either case it will probably take too long to appear for your immediate need. Maybe someone else has news about the prospect of AGP X700's.
