Help in Choosing Digital Video Software

I now own my first digital camcorder and need an easy to use, reasonably featured, high quality DVD video editing software package. It needs to be easy to use. I would prefer to have a very capable program with cool features, as long as it doesn't take a degree in biomechanical engineering. My whole family should be able to learn how to use it.

I want to be able to burn my digital video's to DVD and also capture some old Hi8 video to this program. I want to be able to play them back on any DVD player ( I think that means I need MPEG2 but I'm not sure).

I'm willing to spend the money for a good retail product.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
