DVD + or - media preferences?

I've just ordered the NEC 1300a DVD burner and now I would like to know what is the best choice of DVD-r discs to buy. Here in Israel they don't even sell them so I'll have to order from abroad. Most like the US as my family can ship them over for me. Anyhow, I can't just go buy a 5 pack and experiment with them so I really need DH community input. What dvd media do you prefer?? cost and quality obviously being the most important factors.

again US sold or possibly UK sold if they are right price and ship internationally for a reasonable shipping rate....

tia!

Big Grin

i myself use the cheap princo's....but many people say they suck...not for me (i own a sony dru500)
you should try yourself..different brands.....i don't know if you want to play your disk on a stand alone dvd player. SOme players have problems with different brands

i also tried some white label dvd-r (25pieces for 26 euro's) and they also work good for me...but only at 2 speed. Higher speeds will cost more ..because you need quality for that

System Specs

It actually depends on what you'll be using them with. For example I only use (-) media because my home DVD players only reads those. So if you're going to be using them on different players it's best to get one of each and test them out first. Also use quality media, I cannot stress this enough! I've used the cheapo stuff they stop working a few months after burning. Personally I use 1x Fuji media because they are the cheapest around(about $70 for 100) and although they take awhile to burn they last and I've never had a bad one. Its best to get slower quality media instead of no-name 4x stuff. Sorry I cannot help you out with finding them overseas, good luck, and have fun with the sweet new dvd burner

Edit- BTW, there is no price or quality difference between - and + media. Get whatever works best for your needs.

hmm....on the + media......you store less...because part of the space i used for error correction....that is why some people say +is superior

quality wise prico's suck (sorry) but for movies and data you don't want to keep very long, they are good enough (if they burn correctly on your drive)

They work perfect for me (10 pieces 10 euro's)

As stated above, alot depends on what your standalone can play, luckily mine can play both + or - as well as +rw.

You should check out www.dvdrhelp.com they have an excellent data base(s) for burners, standalones and media. People there report their experiences with the aboves combinations. I'm sure you'll find your burner and standalone in them, it should help you find the right combination for compatability and longjevity. Also the general concensus over at Afterdawn.com seem to prefer Ritek media.

You can also download a cool little program DVDinfoPro it can identify your media as well as your burner(s) capabilitys. Comes in quite handy for helping you to tweak settings in your ripping/burning programs. The freeware version has adware in it though
but I've learned to live with it for now. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
It came in handy last weekend when Best Buy had Imations +/- on sale 50 for 59.99.
Alot of people at Afterdawn said they were garbage made by CMC turned out just the - were. The +'s were made by Ricoh burn at 2.4x no coasters so far even burned one at 4X.
