??? dvd->ps3

i have a comp with windows home server. i want to store some dvd(& possibly bd) on it to play on my ps3. i have used dvd fab to convert(using the built in ps3 conv option) a movie to mpeg4 format that is acceptable to ps3 but the compression was so bad(down to 1.2 gig) that the movie wasnt even worth watching. i also tried the direct vob passthrough but my ps3 doesnt 'recognise' the file.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: dvd->ps3

give handbrake a go, i use it for all my media, and it's got a PS3 preset you could try using (or tweaking with a tad)

Re: dvd->ps3

I also have used dvd fab using the DVD to DVD Main Movie option and saving them to the hard drive. Once i do I use vob join Join VOB Files Tool - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com once all the vob files are joined together I just rename the extention to mpg (vob is just a mpg container VOB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) then remove all the left over files once you have the single mpg file. I save the mpg to my WHS and have had no problems since, I used to when I left the extention .vob but once I rename it to .mpg I had no more problems when streaming to my extender (old moded xbox with xbmc on it). From reading it should handle all the mpg files. PS3™ | Types of files that can be played Long post but I hope that helps.

Re: dvd->ps3

the vobfiles tool works fine(havent tries handbrake yet) except for the fact that u basically lose most/all remote functionality. wich includes the abitlity to to hit start or setup in the movies main menu. now the movie will eventually start on its own but it is a pain.
do u happen to know cih files give the finctionality back & more importantly will ps3 'see' them when copying to its hd?

Re: dvd->ps3

Because all I want is the movie and all the information is stored in the vob files. Also when everything is said and done you end up with 2 copies of the movie. One with all the vobs joined and the original files that were pulled off the disk with DVD Fab. I just remove all the dvd fab files and keep the mpg file.

edit: I just saw your last post. You could try using the full movie backup. I never have used it. I would assume that if all that is left in the video_ts folders are the vob's the process of putting the vob's back together should still work. But like I said I have never tried it. When I get home from vacation on july 10th I will have to give it a try. It might be nice to have all the menus and stuff. I will update then.

Re: dvd->ps3

mike2h what are you using to share videos from your WHS? Because I think that might be your problem with the videos. The following is the only formats that it can share with out a 3rd party tool. On my modded xbox I am using smb share to share to it, which is why it does not effect me.

Windows Media Video (.wmv)
Microsoft Recorded TV Show (.dvr-ms)
Audio Video Interleaved (.avi)
MPEG-1 (.mpeg, .mpg)
MPEG-2 (.mp2, .mpeg, .mpg)

Twonky Media Server (Twonky works with iTunes, Windows Media Connect, UPnP servers and NAS devices), and PVConnect (PacketVideo) is another. Both will Convert it to the proper format.

Below is a list of addon's for WHS if you need it.
Windows Home Server Addins

I am sorry but I cannot test it because I do not have a PS3 but I do know twonky works with my xbox360.
