I had a 7min project exported to qt format in final cut pro. I then burned the file on a dvd (1.44GB). I didn't have time to test it there (or do proper editing, but nvm), so now when I try to play it here on my PC, it doesn't play properly. I don't have quicktime installed (and I don't want to install it) and all the players I use can't play it apart from VLC that plays the audio fine but the video is kinda in a slow motion/skip frames mode when playing it, and all my other players either don't play it at all or play only audio and no video at all.


Suggestions?

I can't burn it again since the original is a few thousand miles away and I do not have access to an Apple computer here nor can afford to buy one. (I can't afford to buy a mighty mouse right now lol)

only suggestion would be to try to bring the project into an Apple store (or reseller) where they have FCP installed and re-export the session (if the staff let you)

Did you make the file self contained or as a reference file? (If it's 1.66GB it's probably self contained.)

The only thing I can think of is that it encoded with Apple's ProRes codec. I'm not sure if that's proprietary, but if it is then installing Quicktime will be your easiest bet.

Just download the Quicktime player (not Safari or iTunes), convert the file, then uninstall it.

I found a solution, kind off. I used Super and transcoded to file with ffmpeg at 25fps, high quality (not top), avi container and mpeg-4 codec. It works although the quality is way down from the original. I will try a few more things.

DJ, I don't think there is an Apple store in this city. Or in this country.

not neccessarily an Apple store, but an Apple "premium" reseller, there's usually more than a few in most cities that I'm aware of...

Perhaps in other countries. For Apple (and xbox live), Greece is located right next to Pluto.
Apple has one official destributor, but he is in Athens and I don't know if they even have a proper store.
