Big Grin From Retail DVDs to iPod generation 5 (60GB) Tutorial

Since Apple released its iPod 60 Gigabyte, I have been wanting one for so long. Apple states that no commerical DVD will be able to be converted to the iPod. I have done this successfully and very easy. I will this the proper things needed in order to do this successfully below.

Programs needed (must be registered leaglly in order to do so)

Slysoft Anydvd
Slsysoft Clonedvd Mobile
Quicktime 7.0
iTunes latest build

Hardware

Excellent computer meaning AMD 2800+ or above and fast harddrives
DVD reader that is unlocked (no region, no limit firmware cracked)
iPod and original cables

This next part comes directly from Slysoft. Very handy never mind the first picture, since it it is very old and new mobile devices have surfaced.
CloneDVD mobile - Apple iPod Video

The User Interface is very simple and you will notice that CloneDVD mobile does not have any menus. It is a Filmstrip that takes you through all the settings step by step, until the copying process can start. All the settings you need to adjust are in the Filmstrip! You cannot overlook anything! If you have not selected any necessary information, you cannot reach the next screen of the Filmstrip. The “Next” button will remain inactivated until you select all of the required information.

HINT: Use the right mouse button! Apart from the context sensitive help, some additional functions can only be selected via the right mouse button. The symbol on the left will call your attention to right mouse button context menus in this manual.

Start

Please make sure that you have everything needed for copying:
  • a DVD-reader
  • the original movie
  • sufficient hard-disk space on your PC
  • iTunes
  • sufficient hard-disk space on your iPod
You now see the start screen of CloneDVD mobile. The first screen of the Filmstrip

First you are asked to what format you want to convert your movie. Choose the format you want to continue. Severeal other information can be found in the start screen.
  • "Info": Here you'll find information about the version number and your registration.
  • "Preferences": Here you can activate or deactivate the automatic update search, or use own sounds
  • "Help": Opens this helpfile
NOTE: In the following, we're showing the use of CloneDVD mobile in connection with the iPod The output files wil be in mp4 format and can be transferred to the iPod with iTunes.

HINT: You should visit our website to download existing updates. To do so, click the Slysoft logo in the bottom left corner which takes you automatically to your internet browser.

Title Configuration

Put the original DVD in your DVD-reader, or DVD-writer. Now choose the drive where the DVD is in. You'll reach the explorer for browsing to the DVD drive by a click onto the small button with the orange arrows. Select the Video_TS folder. The data will be loaded.

NOTE: You will see an error message if your DVD is CSS-encoded and CloneDVD mobile cannot load your DVD, (please refer to the information under “What you should know”).

On the right hand side you will see the title selection and on the left hand side either the movie preview (which is started by default) or an overview about the available data.
  • Select the title you want to convert
  • The main movie normally is the title with the longest playtime.
  • Split a movie: If you want to split your movie into two parts, click onto the scissors under the preview screen. The quality of the output file won't change. Just the size. The following image appears:

move the left or the right triangle to the chapter where you want to cut the movie. Do it the other way round when you convert the second part of the movie.
  • Movie preview: You can start the movie preview by first clicking on a title and then clicking on the “Play“-button (green triangle) right below the preview panel. You can change the playback speed (1x-8x) by using the right mouse button inside the preview panel. The movie preview allows you to easily identify each title required for backup
Now click onto "Next".

Audio Settings

Most movies offer different audio streams. In this window, the available audio streams are shown. Select the language you want to have in your movie.

A click onto "next" will lead you to the next window.

Output Method

On the lefthand side, you will find a summary of your selected title and properties. On the right-hand side, adjust the output file settings.

Movies cannot be written directly on your iPod. You need iTunes to transfer them there.
  • Resolution: Select the resolution you want to have the output file converted to. You can choose between:
    320x240 pixel or 640x480 pixel
If you double the resolution, the filesize will be doubled as well.
  • Video Quality: You can adjust the quality of the output video file by moving the slider. Better quality increases the filesize. A click onto the button right to the slider resets the quality to the default value. You can also see the estimated filesize to determine wether there is enough space left on your harddrive.
  • Enter the filename to write: Here you can select the name you want to store the file under, and choose the location on your harddisk where it should be saved.
  • Label: Enter the label you want to let your player show when you load the movie.
HINT: Create a folder on your harddisk where you store the converted files. This will save a lot of time.

Click onto "Go!" to reach the last chapter of the filmstrip.

Transcoding the movie

On the left hand side you can either see snapshots of the movie during the transcoding process, a final summary of the selected settings, or log window which shows the processing tasks.

The following tabs are available:
  • Snapshot window: Picture Snapshots show which parts of the movie are transcoded at the moment.
  • Summary: Here you can see all parts of your personal selection
  • Log window: Here you can see the processes which CloneDVD mobile does at the moment
You can open the following context menu with a right click into the log window:
    • "Clear": Here you can delete the content of the Log window
    • "Save": Saves technical details about the copying process at the last selected directory
    • "Save as": Here you can save technical details about the copying process on the hard disk
    • "Debugging information": Shows technical details about debugging
    • "What’s this?": Opens the context help
On the right hand side you can watch the progress of the transcoding procedure and a graphically presented bit-rate statistic. It informs you in realtime about the properties of the video input and output data. The area of the video bit-rate statistic goes from 0-10 MBts

Transferring the files from your harddisk to the iPod

To transfer the video files to your iPod, you'll have to use iTunes. Please refer to the manual of your iPod for more detailed information. Yeah Right what manual.

Now here comes the tricky part. Which I found on apple's site. But I want to show what is said on their site regarding dvd's.

Straight from Apples site

Can I transfer my DVDs into iTunes and sync to my iPod?

iTunes and QuickTime Pro do not support importing content from DVD videos. YES YOU CAN IDIOTS after reencoding them to m4v.

With QuickTime 7 Pro, you can create your own videos that will play on the new iPod. Already have great home movies you want to play on your iPod? No problem. QuickTime 7 Pro helps you easily convert them to a format that iPod understands.* Just follow these easy instructions and you'll be watching your own video on your iPod in no time.

Step 1

Make sure you have updated your QuickTime software to version 7.0.3 or later. If you don't have QuickTime 7.0.3 installed, get it now.

Step 2

Open QuickTime 7 Pro. If you don't have it, get QuickTime 7 Pro today.

Step 3

Choose "Open File..." from the File menu.

Select the movie you'd like to play on your iPod, then click the Open button. If you haven't yet recorded your movie, see our tutorial on Creating Movies (Mac only).

Step 4

Choose "Export..." from the File menu.

Step 5

Choose "Movie to iPod (320x240)" from the export drop down list and click the Save button.

The Export progress bar shows you how much of the export process is completed. The longer your movie and the larger its frame size, the longer the export will take.

Once the export is complete, QuickTime Pro will place on your Desktop a new version of your movie that will play on the iPod. Double-click the new file and play it to make sure it looks as you expect.

Step 6

To get the movie onto your iPod, launch iTunes 6. If you do not have it, download iTunes 6 now.

Step 7

Drag your new movie file into your iTunes library in the folder or playlist of your choosing.

Step 8

Attach your iPod to your computer and synch the iPod with iTunes. For detailed synching instructions, see the iPod tutorial. To play the movie on your iPod, select "Videos" then "Movies" from the iPod Main Menu. Movies will be listed here alphabetically. Click on the desired movie to play.

* By following the steps in this tutorial, QuickTime 7 Pro will automatically create an .m4v file containing H.264 video and AAC audio that is optimized for iPod. iPod can play the following video formats:
  • H.264 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio
  • MPEG-4 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

I hope everyone enjoys this who have a iPod. I broke down due to iPod Killer from microsoft has not been released because it is still in the beta testing (Heck it might get a virus).

Enjoy

It's not tough at all. Infact, you use the exact same programs for Windows too, although you will need to purchase QuickTime Pro in order to export the file to the iPod, and the others you can use as trial versions. There are a bunch of free tools you can use to export DVD to the iPod as well for all OS. You just have to search for them.

BTW, Pete, I don't mean to rain on your parade as it's a nice tutorial, however, have you tried Handbrake? It's a freeware program, and runs under Mac OS X, and there is a Linux version too (the Windows version is in the experimental stage at the moment). THIS tutorial will take you through using Handbrake. Great thing is that it's just one program. You will still need to use iTunes to transfer the file over to the iPod though.
