WinDVD 2.5 Editing Problems

I'm using WinDVD 2.5 to try and edit some old TV programs which I've had on VHS tapes for along time. I've tried following the Help files, but I can't seem to quite get the hang of editing out the commercials or parts of the videos that I want to delete. If anyone is familiar with this program and could provide me with some tips it would surely be appreciated.
