Headphones Discussion and Recomendation Thread

I've noticed a fair few regulars here enjoy listening to music or playing games using a nice pair of headphones, so I've made this thread so you guys can recommend the headphones you like and why.

I'll start off with the pair I bought about a week ago, the Sony MDR - V6/7506.
Now i know some of you will shame me for choosing Sony, but hear me out first. These cans have been in production since 1985, when Sony actually made quality stuff.
The frequency response is as close to flat as I've heard, and the clarity is amazing. Plus at full volume there's no audible distortion (i wore a pair of Etymotic ER-20 earplugs to test at this volume)

They're also very comfortable, and the 3m coiled cable means I can listen from anywhere in my room, plus the swivelling earcups will help me while DJ'ing.

I just got a pair of these sony's and i've been very impressed so far. I tried some of the shure e2c's a while back, and they were amazing, but these are really close and at a quarter of the price, are a steal. I don't have a good pair of cans...just some old technics.

Grado SR-60.

Great all around response. I'm using the cupped pads /w them. For the money they're tough too beat.

Portable Shure E2c's

Suberb isolation, and clearity.

I have a few other pairs of Sennheisers but I use the first two the most.

Sennheiser HD 212 Pro -

Pros - Great sound, detachable cord, and reasonable price.

Cons - Hurt your ears after a while, make you look goofy.

Koss PortaPro... 15-25,000 Hz, 101dB SPL/1mW, <0.2% distortion. Weighs in at 74 grams with 4' of wire. Comes with pleather satchel, phono adapter.

pros: sounds great, msrp: US$50, lifetime warranty!
cons: not any thinner when folded, hinge-pins are/were plastic (do not sit on ), metal band digs into your scalp if you don't adjust it right.

Excellent listening, and with the tightness set on mid/light you quickly forget you're wearing them. The tightness slides lets the driver section swing a few degrees farther outward, letting the bulk of the pressure rest on the two oblong pads above your ears. While they do fold, it doesn't help much since the drivers stay at a 90˚ angle to the headband - I still worry about leaning on them in my bag (so I leave them on instead ). The wires are covered with a soft but slightly tacky plastic and tend to snag easily if you leave them dangling while moving. Hopefully by the time this pair breaks they'll have switched to 1->2 wiring. Oh yeah, and you get weird compliments like "those look like they'll give you a tumour".

Favorite headphone after years of trying out different cans has to be the Sennheiser HD650. Not cheap, but wow do they sound pretty. With a nice portable amp they sound even better. But yeah, headphones are the way to go

Bought this setup for ME for xmas. Headphones are Sony's MDR-SA1000. They replaced my aging Sony MDR V600's which where falling apart after around 8 years of use. The new SA's are far FAR better sounding. They take around 40 hours of burn it time (at minimum) to reveal thier true abilities. A rich solid bass that doesn't overwhelm like the V600's do. Mid and high frequencies are reproduced cleanly and they are very comfortable to wear. The cans fit over your ears and rest on the skull so no more ear aches after extended periods of use. I also purchased a Headroom "Total Airhead" amp to drive the new cans. The Sony's and the Airhead make beautiful music together. One word of warning though, the AirHead is capable of driving your headphones from any source to really really loud and clear audio signals. I use it to drive my new I-River MP3 player as well and it can achieve MAJOR volumes without any distortion so beware, your eardrums are just two to a customer.

I also have that pair and quickly found the vibration uncomfortable plus a really loud buzzing noise that affects the entire product line. Still, they work on any stereo soundcard and do emerse you in games. A good option for those people that don't have a multichannel soundcard.

My recommendation is the Zalman 5.1 headphones featured on DH hardware reviews I had bought the AudioFX set to replace them (plus I needed a mic) but the sound quality and multichannel surround can't be beat for the price.

Thats odd because I dont get that buzz effect at all unless I plugged it into the usb hub on my montior. But if I plug it into the usb on my computer then I dont get it.

I didnt find the vibration uncomfortable. Also I have a X-FI Extreme music so I use the 3d headphone .Now if I was still on a Audigy2 zs, then I wouldnt had bought them to replace the kinyo 5.1s I had that the pin plug got bent on them.

The buzz was hard to hear on X-FI platinum but in all the reviews I've read and on my own Audigy 2 its really loud when no sound is coming through. I can't be arsed to look for a fix maybe there is one out there. The vibration really only gets bad during BF2 artillery strikes.

I recommend KOSS PRO3AA or KOSS PRO4AA if you like heavy deep base without distortion.
I dont recommend Zalman if you dont like headsets with the soundquality of an clock radio.

Its a waste to buy headphones around 20-50 $ aim for Koss or Sennheiser for around 80-100 $.

But most important of all, look up a hifi store and make sure you try them out !

Let me guess, your ears are more sensitive to the sound of money than actual sound quality. Zalman certainly isnt audiophile quality but it isnt crap!

i haven't heard the Zalman's myself, but yet i am still very sceptical as how possible it is to put 3 decent quality drivers into such a small space…

The front and read channel placement is near perfect, which in itself is excellent for headphones, the center channel isnt as strong but good while the subwoofer technically doesnt exist. When you run a sound test the placement is spot on yet no sub exists which is kinda weird but I just turned up the bass +7% in volume control and it more or less emulates a subwoofer in Dvds and games. Tbh I dont know how they can claim 5.1 if no subwoofer exists

I got these Sennheisers for around $220. Here's a link on Newegg:

Absolutely amazing quality, but for some reason I have trouble wearing them for hours on end.

(actually I used a much stronger word that started with an "s") He laughed and said the store got back alot of them for much the same reason. They didn't sound good at all. Absolutely no bass or any appreciable high frequencies. I had them hooked up to my Audigy ZS2 in a 5.1 configuration and played some games that supported 5.1. I really tried to get them to sound better but couldn't. A friend brought his set over and I tried them again with the same results. Ok OmegaRED, they probably are ok for LAN parties or if you have nothing else, OR if you like them, I just beg to differ. Cheers

If they worked like he said they did I dont see why you should force him to accept your opinion on them, when he has his own.

I surey will not tell people to buy 80+ Headphones and telling them that all 80 and belove headphones are bad because not every one are audio people and not every one have the same ears.

I would still recommand the kinyos 5.1s because i never had problems them and they did what they said they would do. Just like me recommanding the current headphones I have.

Hi. I found this on the net..

"To enable 5.1 surround sound on stereo headphones with an Audigy series card do the following:In Creative Speaker Settings, untick Synchronise with Control PanelRestart the machineGo into Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices and click Adavnced... under Speaker Settings.Select 5.1 Surround Sound SpeakersGo into your Creative Speakers Settings again, and choose Headphones. Now open up the Creative EAX Console and enable CMSS1 (Do NOT use CMSS2)You now have 5.1 sound with stereo headphones. These are the steps that Creative themselves tell you to take.Note, that it uses HRTF, not actual discrete channels (of course), so the sounds will only "appear" to be in 3D. Nothing beats a true 5.1/6.1/7.1 discrete speaker setup!"

I cant get it to work and if it works, how do i test it??
Any ideas or thoughts abut this?????
