I have exactly the same hardware & software combination as you.
What I found is that the sound that encoded as stereo (such as environment sound) will be produced by the front speaker only if you turn off the CMSS. If CMSS is on, the stereo sound (in the game) will be produced by the surround speakers as well. As for sound that are encoded as 5.1 sound (such as enemy movement sounds, bullet sound, etc) will be produced correctly by the 5.1 speakers regardless of the CMSS settings.
Personally I like to turn CMSS off whenever i know that the game/movie has encoded 5.1 sound.
