Creative Audigy 2 AD_EXT pin assignment

Oh.. after reading this forum for 2 days, and making few tests, I have some questions to make you.
I'm an Audigy 2 ZS owner, and I have my old Live! 5.1 Platinum, and I want to use my old Live! Drive IR with my new Audigy.

I've made the AUD_EXT-AD_EXT cable described in this forum, and after checking every pin link, I still have few problems:

1. the optical output intermittently lights up with no audio output.

2. I hear the Aux2 signal only if I act on the Line2/Mic2 slider on the Mixer, and the audio is distorted on the left channel, and absent (noise only) on the right channel... no audio acting on the Aux2 slider on the mixer, even if I put signal on the Line2/Mic2 input.

Now, in the cable schematic posted in this forum, the pins I2SCLK and I2SFS are not connected... may be this the reason for my problem?

The only tested working thing by now is the headphones.

Another thing: I've found on the net an interesting thing for our SB:

Also if the product is marked HiTeC, it's easy to see in the images that this product may be made by creative (same PCB, same serigraphy, same layout style).

for the line2/aux2 in you need to connect the i2s clock and framsync pins you mentioned are not connected

chances are that device you posted a link to will work just fine, but you won;t have all the extra connections your Live Drive does.

the optical device not workingâ€¦ sounds like its not getting enough power/signal
check to see if the cable is damaged or not, try also using a different s/pdif output pin

don't forget to connect the bridge wire, bridging pins 25&35

1. Your optic output MUST be lit all time... If otherwise, shomething is wrong with connection, cable may be too long, not enough power, etc... Try connecting optic OUT to optic IN loopback & see what you get at input...

2. Live! Drive IR seems to have only one working I2S output... When i tried to connect Live! Drive to my Audigy 2, I got only one input & it was distorted too. I think that old Live! Drives can't work with 96KHz I2S sync. Only way to change this is to use kX drivers...
You will need to connect I2SCLK to I2SFS. Check what happends when you do this...

I'm really interested if you can use your remote controller when you connect Live! Drive IR to Audigy 2... Please post here if you managed something...

After first test:

- the optical output work... I've never setup the SPDIF frequency to 48Khz in the AudioHQ... the strange thing is that the SPDIF IN pass trought the Drive directly and accept 96KHz frequency too (tested with my home dvd/divx player) and the output is managed from the Drive that do not support 96 Khz (as mentioned many times in this forum).

- the Aux2 and Line2/Mic2 still not work even connecting I2S clock and framesync... I try tonight with kX drivers, setting the I2S clock to 48KHz as you tell me.

I come soon with more test result.

Yes, there's only Aux2 working and is totaly distorted... and the I2S sync is set to 96 Khz and I've not found any place to change it on the kX drivers... you know where to change it?

Why? What solution adding 3 Mhz clock to the 96 Khz frame sync? Perhaps damaging something for the highest frequency, I think.

I'm in my home town right now, no sound cards stuff for next few days, sorry...

About changing I2S sync from 96 to 48KHz there must be some kX console command, but i don't know which one... Seems we'll need to ask Eugene (kX developer)...

About I2SCLK to I2SFS question:

Oooops! my mistake... Everything should be connected 1:1, this way:

(LiveDrive to Audigy2 order)

AC97CLK to P16VCLK,
I2SCLK to I2S BitClock,
I2SFS to I2S FrameSync,
I2S in to I2S in

Oh, Samir, I've tested the remote control, and it works too, but only volume and mute controls under Creative Mixer... I think they have changed the codes with the new RC, but is not a problem, the important is that work, and is usable in a customizable application.

mmmm, PS: where are gone my posts about ADC ICs and cable diagram? lost in the net?

This is one post lost, and the other is about Aux2 / Line2/Mic2 inputs, where changing both UDA1360TS with UDA1361TS allow that inputs to work with 96Khz/24bit sample rate (the pin layout is the same, and looking at the data sheet, the may work without changing nothing other).

Interesting! Have you actually TRIED changing UDA1360TS to UDA1361TS on Live!Drive?!?

I'm glad that remote worked well, because i wasn't 100% sure about right GPI / GPO numbering...

I've found 'em on the italy site, but they say that is a part of the europe group... I've used search command on "uda1361" that result with 484-0997 rs code... next searched for 1360 but with no results, they don't have them.

I've contacted RS today, and they told me that the order is sent to me today and arive to me monday.

Hi guys,
well, the ICs are arived, and after replaced the old 1360, the result is the same.
I've taken an oscilloscope at my work, and done some measurements: on the AUD_EXT connector the I2SClk and I2SFS are distorted, and these signals in the ADC are good but the same as in the Live! card (48 Khz)...
I realized: there's an IC that generate that signals on the Live! Drive and that IC is U14 (CT8910DAS).
I detached the U14 pins from the PCB and wire linked the two signals from the ADC to the AUD_EXT connector (bypassing U15 that let the signals go only from the Drive to the AUD_EXT. Now both I2S inputs works well

The same thing is to be done on the SPDIF outputs, where the P06AF block the 96 Khz signal, bypassing that IC, the signal arive perfectly to the outputs, except for the optical that seems not to output well the 96 Khz, but I do not have any periferal to test it (just only my technics syntoamplifier that do not accept 96 Khz signals).

I'll give you more info when I've done the job.

Very good news l0v3r, you are the man! So reomoving that U14 fixed old Live!Drive... Now that I2S (1361) works @ 96kHz do you mind trying it @ 48kHz using sptr 76 0 80000400 command, i'm interested if this would work with Audigy 2...

About optic output @ 96kHz, i think it's the TOTX 179 and/or TOTX 179 optic converters that work good only up to 48kHz...

OK, I'm here again,
The I2S job is done

!
These are the changes to made to convert Live! Drive IR to 96 Khz / 24 bit to connect to an Audigy 2 ZS:

- remove R109 and R110
- remove U14
- remove R94
- link both pads where R94 was together (only one 47 ohm resistor, R77)
- link outer pad where was R110 to pad 3 where was U14 (it's I2SFS)
- link outer pad where was R109 to pad 4 where was U14 (it's I2SCLK)
- link pad 1 to pad 6 where was U14 (it's AC97CLK)
- replace both UDA1360TS with UDA1361TS

You can also see the following picture:

To Samir:

the 12th bit of register 76 set to 1 (4xx -> 1xxx xxxx xxxx) select 96Khz, set to 0 (0xx -> 0xxx xxxx xxxx) select 48Khz, for the I2S sampling rate, and work fine

! (may be a new setting for kX drivers)

I didn't understand this very well, could you please confirm:

- 96kHz I2S should be Audigy2's default (reg 76 = 00000400 hex),
(or 0xxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx binary),
- 48kHz I2S should be if reg 76 = 8xxxxxxx hex,
(or 1xxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx binary),

so I2S Input selector is bit 32 not bit 12... bit 12 is for p16v I2S Out, but i wanted you to check I2S INPUT @ 48kHz (sptr 76 0 8000xxx0)

y - p16v I2S PB (?) (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 or c),

q - p16v SPDIF Out (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 or c).

y, z, q values:

0 - default,
1 - bypass & 48kHz,
2 - 192kHz,
4 - 96kHz,
8 - 41kHz,
c - mute.

I still don't undesrstand problem with SPDIF, what's that green wire for?

I'm sorry for my error

, the bit is not the 12th but the 11th; set reg 76 to:

- 1xxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx binary (8xxxxxxxh)
in the kX I2S status say 48Khz I2S input, but nothing change in the AUD_EXT (I2SFS and I2SCLK remain the same for 96Khz)

Instead:

- xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx x1xx xxxx xxxx binary (xxxxx4xxh)
in the kX I2S status say 96Khz I2S input and is true also in the AUD_EXT

- xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx x0xx xxxx xxxx binary (xxxxx0xxh)
in the kX I2S status say 48Khz and now change also the I2SFS and I2SCLK in the AUD_EXT

So, the bit to change the I2S input sample rate is not the 32 but the 11, where 1 = 96Khz, 0 = 48Khz.
I've used sptr 76 0 40 for 48 Khz I2S input and sptr 76 0 440 for 96 Khz I2S input.

Now, about the SPDIF, the green wire was temporary for test, but the result is perfect; there's no need to put that wire, you just only need to:

- detach U10 pins 2, 3 and 11 from the PCB
- connect together the relative pads 2 and 3 (the "test" green wire go from the pad 2 route to pad 3/11 route)

I've done some test today with this mod, and connecting the Coax Out to In in loopback, I can record perfectly from SPDIF... same result with loopback on Optical connectors, so both Coax and Optical works perfectly @ 96 Khz (also with oscilloscope the input signal is the same as the output)

Reading some info on the toshiba site, they say that TOTX179 and TORX179 works well up to 12.8 Mb/s, and with 96 Khz / 24 bit signal we are @ only about 4 Mb/s.

Experiments:
- I've tried to connect only pin 2 and @ 48 Khz the signal exit only from pin 3, instead @ 96 Khz exit nowhere
- after joined the pads 2 and 3, I've tried to connect pin 11 (that is an input) and @ 48 Khz the signal appear as noise on various pins, instead @ 96 Khz this pin ground the signal, so I don't know what kind of use have this pin, buh... leaving it detached the outputs works well @ both 48 Khz and 96 Khz... this is the important

So, I2S signals from AD_EXT (I2SFS & I2SCLK) change only when you mess that 11th bit (I2S Out), logical enough...

Now i have better understanding what you did to SPDIF output, but still, one question remains; Does one only need to detach pins 2, 3 & 11 from that IC for SPDIF to work good at both 48kHz & 96kHz?!?

I wish i have Live!Drive myself here... I'll try to find one - second hand, it could be diffiicult task here in Bosnia... Do you know if anyone has one for sale?

detach pins 2, 3 and 11 and join pads 2 and 3 together; this will route the signal from pad 2 (that come from the AUD_EXT through H05AF) to pad 3/11 (that go to Optical out and Coax out) bypassing U10

Now that I2S (1361) works @ 96kHz do you mind trying it @ 48kHz using sptr 76 0 80000400 command, i'm interested if this would work with Audigy 2... Drive IR to 96 Khz / 24 bit to connect to an Audigy 2 ZS: - remove R109 and R110 - remove U14 - remove R94 - link both pads where R94 was together (only one 47 ohm resistor, R77) - link outer pad where was R110 to pad 3 where was U14 (it's I2SFS) - link outer pad where was R109 to pad 4 where was U14 (it's I2SCLK) - link pad 1 to pad 6 where was U14 (it's AC97CLK) - replace both UDA1360TS with UDA1361TS You can also see the following picture: To Samir: the 12th bit of register 76 set to 1 (4xx -> 1xxx xxxx xxxx) select 96Khz, set to 0 (0xx -> 0xxx xxxx xxxx) select 48Khz, for the I2S sampling rate, and work fine ! l0v3r DriverHeaven Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Italy Posts: 35 Rep Power: 0	I'm sorry for my error , the bit is not the 12th but the 11th; set reg 76 to: - 1xxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx binary (8xxxxxxxh) in the kX I2S status say 48Khz I2S input, but nothing change in the AUD_EXT (I2SFS and I2SCLK remain the same for 96Khz) Instead: - xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx x1xx xxxx xxxx binary (xxxxx4xxh) in the kX I2S status say 96Khz I2S input and is true also in the AUD_EXT - xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx x0xx xxxx xxxx binary (xxxxx0xxh) in the kX I2S status say 48Khz and now change also the I2SFS and I2SCLK in the AUD_EXT So, the bit to change the I2S input sample rate is not the 32 but the 11, where 1 = 96Khz, 0 = 48Khz. I've used sptr 76 0 40 for 48 Khz I2S input and sptr 76 0 440 for 96 Khz I2S input. Now, about the SPDIF, the green wire was temporary for test, but the result is perfect; there's no need to put that wire, you just only need to: - detach U10 pins 2, 3 and 11 from the PCB - connect together the relative pads 2 and 3 (the "test" green wire go from the pad 2 route to pad 3/11 route) I've done some test today with this mod, and connecting the Coax Out to In in loopback, I can record perfectly from SPDIF... same result with loopback on Optical connectors, so both Coax and Optical works perfectly @ 96 Khz (also with oscilloscope the input signal is the same as the output) Reading some info on the toshiba site, they say that TOTX179 and TORX179 works well up to 12.8 Mb/s, and with 96 Khz / 24 bit signal we are @ only about 4 Mb/s. Experiments: - I've tried to connect only pin 2 and @ 48 Khz the signal exit only from pin 3, instead @ 96 Khz exit nowhere - after joined the pads 2 and 3, I've tried to connect pin 11 (that is an input) and @ 48 Khz the signal appear as noise on various pins, instead @ 96 Khz this pin ground the signal, so I don't know what kind of use have this pin, buh... leaving it detached the outputs works well @ both 48 Khz and 96 Khz... this is the important see ja! Seems that you finally discovered a way for old Live!Drives to work properly @ Audigy2 card series... So, I2S signals from AD_EXT (I2SFS & I2SCLK) change only when you mess that 11th bit (I2S Out), logical enough... Now i have better understanding what you did to SPDIF output, but still, one question remains; Does one only need to detach pins 2, 3 & 11 from that IC for SPDIF to work good at both 48kHz & 96kHz?!? I wish i have Live!Drive myself here... I'll try to find one - second hand, it could be diffiicult task here in Bosnia...
