X-Fi XtremeMusic 32 Bit Vista 4GB Support
Hi all.
I have a Question. I run a 32 Bit Vista with a modded ntkmlpa.exe and PAE to use the full 4GB Memory RAM. The board is an ASUS A8n VM CSM, 4 screens. Everithing works fine but the X-Fi XtremeMusic. When i start the Computer with installed card and driver i hear a noise a sough, rustle, sorry i dont know the exact word. When I start the computer and activate the Soundcard 3 minutes after windows welcome, the X-FI works fine too. At moment i let DEvCon do the work for me. What do you think about that and is there a real solution ? THX Cebo Last edited by cebo; Sep 30, 2009 at 06:10 AM. |

Re: X-Fi XtremeMusic 32 Bit Vista 4GB Support
You've probably seen all the articles on PAE, but there is one I want to point to HERE on Microsofts site. Give it a read as I think it's relevant here. The key part is here:
_____________ The primary driver compatibility concern is running PAE mode on 32-bit computers. PAE mode enables processors to address more than 4 GB of memory. The primary difference between PAE memory paging and non-PAE memory paging schemes is the additional level of paging that is required in PAE mode. This is 3 levels of paging that is required in PAE mode instead of 2. Some drivers might not load if PAE is enabled, because the device might be unable to perform 64-bit addressing or the drivers might assume that PAE mode requires more than 4 GB of RAM. Such drivers expect that they will always receive 64-bit addresses when in PAE mode and that they or their device cannot interpret the address. Other drivers might load in PAE mode but cause system instability by directly modifying system page table entries (PTEs). These drivers expect 32-bit PTEs, but receive 64-bit PTEs in PAE mode instead. _____________ The reason it works when you enable the sound after Windows is loaded is could be a timing thing, or the fact that certain conditions have been met in order for the driver to be loaded, or rather start to work. It could also be that a dependant part of the device, maybe a part of the driver tried to load, but was unable to during bootup because of the way the system tried to page the driver, but is able to after Windows is loaded because of the way it's being loaded... or paged after the fact. Don't know if that makes any sense. Anyways, all I know is that using the PAE switch isn't really worth it. Question: is there a reason you are using Vista 32bit? The reason I ask is that the key you have for Vista works for both 32bit and 64bit, so you could download the 64bit version of Vista you have, if you know someone who has a 64bit DVD you could borrow it, or buy the DVD off or Microsoft directly from HERE for a nominal shipping fee, and install that version. AW: X-Fi XtremeMusic 32 Bit Vista 4GB Support
Hi Tipstaff,
I think you are right. I have to use Vista 32 Bit for some software that wont work on Vista 64 Bit. I tried it. Vista 32 Bit works without any limitations with PAE and the Hardware MemoryHole, all driver but the X-Fi driver. Maybe there will be a modded X-Fi driver sometimes. Thank you very much for your effort. Cebo Last edited by cebo; Sep 30, 2009 at 08:37 AM. |
