EEK! X-Fi SB0670 installed on modded drivers has no master volume control

Hi all,

A little a while ago, I had the opportunity to buy an HP X-Fi Xtreme Music SB0670 for $15, so, I bought it.

Unfortunately, I only discovered 2 weeks later that this soundcard isn't realy supporting all the features of the genuine CreativeLabs X-Fi soundcard because, of its drivers.

So, I began to search for info about modded drivers which would offer a workaround on this problem and this is how I came here and found the modded drivers.

So, after I downloaded the two files (SB_X-Fi.rar and
x-fi install mod.zip) and I did what was suggested, I very carefully unistalled the HP drivers provided with he soundcard and I replaced them with the new drivers.

Everything went fine except that at a given point of the installation, it looks like as if the installation process is stuck there for ever but the very first time I installed these drivers, I finally could see that an applet was just waiting there for a user input but I simply couldn't see it because the installation process window was covering my whole screen while the stupid applet was waiting behind it for an answer and as soon as I finally gave the awaited OK, the installation ended successfully.

I did this installation twice and the first time, when I saw that once the drivers were installed, everything was working but I had no master volume control, I finally gave up and I launched the newest drivers that I could find for the X-Fi Xtreme Music soundcard on CreativeLab's web site which were labelled as following:

SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0008.exe

and I didn't even took care to uninstall my "apparently defective" drivers before to install them and I finally got back my master volume control but I unfortunatly lost my "unlocked" drivers.

So, I took the chance to reinstall the previous drivers, once more, to see if the problem would be back and, unfortunately, the problem came back.

So, to sum it all, I'm using an HP X-Fi Xtreme Music SB0670 soundcard installed on the afore mentionned modded drivers and everything seems to work fine except that I don't have a master volume control nowhere anymore since the installation of these drivers.

These drivers and this soundcard were installed right after a fresh installation of Win XP pro SP3 on a brand new system which might be considered a little bit outdated now, even if I just bought it two weeks ago but anyway, this system is a 3.2Ghz P4 installed on a Gigabyte GA-8IPE-1000 and in other words, this is a desktop homebrew computer which has nothing in common (thanks God...lolll) with an HP or a Dell computer.

So, all in all, no matter from where I'm trying to act on the master volume control, it doesn't work, even if I'm trying directly from one of the 3 Creative's console interfaces.

The only way left to me to reduce the output level of the soundcard is by lowering the level of the wave output of the mixer or by lowering the volume output of the audio application that I'm using.

Neither my keyboard volume control nor my remote volume control can act on the master volume control but they both can mute the sound off while I can also do the same thing from anywhere offering a mute option by clicking on it with the mouse.

Finally, even Windows's own mixer gives the same results because no matter how high or low I set the master volume control on it, it doesn't affect the output signal, except as concern the high frequencies which are connected on the line 1 output jack.

I have absoluetly no idea about what file in Windows controls the output volume level but I'm sure that this problem can probably be easily solved.

By the way, I was almost forgetting to let you know that I don't have any volume control icon appearing in the system tray for none of the 3 Creative's console interfaces and this anomaly make sme think that the two anomalies might be strongly linked together...

As a final point by the way, given that I'm always driving 2 power amplifiers at the same time from the soundcard, I noticed a weird thing a few minutes ago and it happens when I increase my volume control, from anyywhere I can, even from the Creative's console volume control.

At this moment, it increases the volume level of my second amp which is dedicated the the high frequencies only because I'm using a biamplified system by which the bass and mid frequencies are driven by one amp while the high frequencies are driven by another amp, so, I use a stereo to 4 channel converter at the output of my audio player (Foobar 2000) and I use the 4/4.1 speaker setup from where a stereo cable is driving one amp from the line out 1 output jack while another stereo cable is driving the other amp from line out 2 jack. This being said, you must bear in mind that I must push the volume level all the way up to 100% just in order to get the high frequencies at the same level than the bass and mid frequencies...

By the way, Windows's own mixer volume control is also affected by this and is behaving exactly like all the other master volume con trols.

As a final word, I must tell you that I can get a normal output level and a normal answer from the master volume control when I select a 2/2.1 speaker setup or an earphone setup but I can't remember which one them it was exactly and I didn't realy took care of it since I could only get one stereo signal while I need two identical stereo signals.

So, any assistance to help me solve this very annoying problem will be extremely appreciated because everything I could think of has already been tried, to no avail...

Thanks in advance.

Chris

nope, I didn't, sorry, but I would if I could find them but the link included in your reply doesn't work...

Could you please tell me where I could find your modded drivers and which version of them I should use to make sure that I will have DTS and Dolby enabled on my HP OEM X-Fi Xtreme Music SB0670 soundcard ?
