Even **NEWER-ER** Santa Cruz Beta Drivers (v4187)

Rejoice!!!

What's New?
===========

v4187
* fixed bugcheck that was reported occurring with Morrowind and GTA Vice City

* Now checks portcls.sys version in 98SE to know if ac3 can be supported.
The mixer topology should no longer show two wave sliders.

* Install removes support files from pending renames if they exist and the
driver is being installed. This corrects a couple of problems that could
occur when uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the driver without
restarting the system.

Haha.. took me 2 hours today wondering why VC wouldn't run...

So these don't support Vice City either? Dammit.

No, these DO support Vice City, whereas the 4186s caused it to crash

Argh! I'd wish Turtle Beach would make up their minds! Are they IN the sound card biz, or out of it like was reported awhile ago. Hence, the lack of driver support.

Well.. until recently.. Or are these drivers from the sound chip manufacturer itself? Sorta like using nvidia ref./beta drivers on a PNY Geforce4 Ti4200 card.

Makes me wish installing a sound card was as easy as inserting a floppy disk..
I don't believe it's a good idea to keep installing the card whenever new drivers show up, and removing it when a few games, and demos crash, and burn using the card. Might muck up the PCI slot, or even the slot contacts themselves.

Yet, the same games, and demos don't crash with my Mobo sound.
(Asus A7N8X non-deluxe.)

Has anyone got surround 5.1 sound to work with all speakers yet??? It did not seem to work on the 4186's or 4187's?????? New drivers work well for me on all other settings.

???

Umm.. I dunno.. I only have a 4.1 setup, so I have no idea about how 5.1
works on it.

I guess the new drivers after Turtle Beach dropped their soundcard line remains an unsolved mystery..

Right now I'm using the A7N8X non-deluxe's onboard sound until this gets sorted out. Like what games the the SC has problems with other than Vice City, The Hulk, etc. The onboard sound SEEMS to not have a problem with any game especially the previously stated ones like the Hulk.

TB never did really say that they were getting out of the soundcard business, but it was expected that they would when Crystal who makes the chips for the TBSC got out of the business. All they said was that There was going to be no more driver updates for the TBSC (but all that changed a few months ago didnt it? Im willing to bet that their future in the biz depends on a viable chip manufacture however.

Hmm.. So the company that makes the chip is bowing out, but the company that uses the chip isn't? Sounds weird, but I guess that explains the new drivers. Yet, it doesn't answer whether or not to trust the card in the future.
Giving that new games, and demos will continue to come out, meaning new problems for the card.
Is TB going to stick by the card, and release drivers that solve the NEW problems as well as the old?

My motherboard sound isn't the greatest, but at least it doesn't seize up the computer, and make it crash on some games like the TBSC using the "official/non-beta" drivers that came out before the 2 new ones.

If it can't be trusted, then what "budget" Soundcard would be the best to use? I've heard the Creative cards like the Audigy2 sound great, but are plagued with problems, and motherboard compatibility issues. That, and they're kind of expensive.

Hercules Fortissimo II and III are good cards with pretty decent drivers... I can't think of anything else right now.

After the way that Creative treated the Audigy owners it will be a cold day in hell before I buy another. The audigy 2 is a nice card, I admit, but I just can see them dropping support tomorrow when they decide to release an Audigy3 like they did the original Audigy. Not to meantion all the problems that were obviously theirs but they never did admit to. It says something when a card is a year and a half old and the company no longer support it. If you buy an Audigy 2 make sure its OEM so you dont feel as bad when they drop it.

As for TB, at least they are changed their stance on not making new drivers so that kind of says something about them. If they do decide to drop I guess ill go with onboard. its getting good enough now. especially if everyone starts doing DD like the nforce

i really don't have any problems with games etc with these drivers. never had with older ones either. if i had a problem with sound, it was some stupid codec that messed things up. i think it's great that there updating their drivers again. i've had given up on that with them.

A thought on Audigy 2

I installed the board and system crashed. I followed all the instructions on drivers etc and am not new to upgrades. Could not get system to run with audigy 2 board. I am back to TB and very happy with new drivers except the problem with 5.1 surround sound.
