thing is i only really use an optical cable to a Yamaha 5.1 receiver, headphones and mic analog every now and again. If i get some 1/8" pin to RCA leads and plug them into my receivers direct stereo in (3 wires for 5.1), what might be the differences I'd notice over the optical connection, aren't the DTS and DDLive dependent on using the optical?

Please, try analog with that card. You will still have DTS and DD from movies etc. DDL and DTS-C are real-time encoder for digital connections.
When the XM was first released many tested it @ various large AV forums and found that the XM had better DAC's then most of the gear people connect it to. SO in short this mean you will most likely get better audio from a analog connection to this card then you would with a digital one. Unless you have a very, very high priced receiver unit. Doesn't mean your receiver is bad just the XM DAC's are quite good. Using analog connection should increase your sound quality by alot with stock opamps. Install a set of LM4562's or better and you should be very happy. Test it out. Hool up the XM with analog cables.
