As a stopgap, why not go real cheap...
Newegg.com - ENCORE ENM232-8VIA 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - Sound Cards
VIA VT1723 is a "VIA Vinyl" family controller, model "Tremor" (Envy 24DT), and to do 7.1, it must be using the VT1618 codec.
No point going any dearer, if you just need a stopgap while the other one is fixed.
VIA Arena - Display Drivers - Driver for Vista32
VIA Arena - Display Drivers - And for XP32
Dated 7th March 2008
CMEDIA - the chipset of the next card up, have been asleep for a couple of years, since the last bit of news on the site is "Visit C-Media at Computex 2007, Hall 1, D630, D632", I'm guessing they all got lost on the way, and forgot to pay for the CMEDIA.COM domain (only C-Media Electronics | Total PC Audio Solutions left now). The trumpeted driver update (HydrogenAudio) was delayed then swept under the carpet, it's forum section removed. The forum itself is a pretty forlorn place, full of Windows Vista woes. (Beta Vista drivers for CMEDIA PCI audio on the forum, none on the main site). The best they managed for complaints of their onboards not working in Vista, was a "not our problem", blaming it on the BIOS not setiing it up correctly to activate generic HD-audio support.
Doing a javascript :alert(document.lastModified); on them did give a date not so lone ago, but possibly just a server change.
Anyway, until they show some sign of genuine activity, it would be fair to treat CMEDIA as dead!

just sk it up & use onboard sound. unless you got $$ to burn having a 'bkup' soundcard is a waste imo.
however if your going to get one consider someting that will help u in your driver development, if that is possible.
