X-Fi to Antec front panel (audio+mic)

I've been putting several hours in this (i'm a persistent one), but ashamed as i am, i'm looking for some specialist help. I've read a lot of similar topics on fora, but none could offer me the answer.

My X-Fi has the "intel standard" HD audio connector (10 pins, no pin at 8), and my antec front panel cable has one plug with the ten wires, and the ten wires seperate as well.

At first i connected the complete plug to the x-fi connector, and tested it out. The sound from the rear works just fine (and sounds pretty good), but there are some weird things going on with the front panel (windows detects the headphone when it's not there, and vice versa, things like that).

So i figured something must be wrong with the wires, the X-fi connector must have a different order than the front panel cable or something. So i started to look up the wiring maps.

The X-Fi's:

1. Port1L
2. GND
3. Port1R
4. /
5. Port2R
6. Sense1 return
7. /
8. /
9. Port2L
10. Sense2 return

The front panel cables have different labels, and it took me some time, and i'm still not sure i've got it right. This is the order i think is right:

1. Mic
2. GND
3. Mic Bias
4. /
5. FPout R
6. Ret R
7. /
8. /
9. FPout L
10. Ret L

And this is what happens in windows (Vista) in the control panel\sound window:

Nothing plugged in the front panel:
Headphones: not plugged in (ok)
Microphone FP: working (but it's not plugged in!)
When i plug my headphone in the mic port:
Headphones: working (but it doesn't play nor record)
Microphone: working (but it doesn't)

When i plug my headphone in the headphone port:
Headphones: not plugged in (but it is! no sound)
Microphone: not plugged in (ok)

When i change the position of the wires to something else, this behaviour changes ...

Oh yeah, of course my headphone itself is working nicely My headphone works nicely as microphone as well ...

I'm looking for some help specific to my case, i.e. i hope someone can tell me if i'm "translating" the wire names correctly, or if i'm missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the cables should be a 1:1 match, ie pin 1 of the x-fi to pin 1 of the fpanel etc

Sorry for the late reply, i was on a holiday (snowboarding in Alpe D'Huez!).

Of course the first thing i tried was attaching it with the front panel connector, and that doesn't work. This is what happens:

No sound through my speakers, and it seems windows detects the headphone is connected.

This is the status in different situations:

Nothing plugged in:
Headphones working (and selected), speakers working. (headphones are NOT plugged in)
Microphone FP: working (and selected) (it's not plugged in!)

Headphone plugged in to the microphone port:
Headphones: working (and selected), speakers working (no sound at all)
Microphone FP: working (and selected): works fine!

Headphone plugged into the speaker FP port:
Headphone: not plugged in, speakers working and selected (sound through the speakers, not through the headphone)
Microphone FP: Not plugged in

Can anyone conclude which cables should be switched?

I can't help but I'm giving you a rep point for the rare, and correct, pluralization of the word 'forum'. WTG!!

[O/T] We Belgians are very aware of languages (most of us speak four of them; Dutch, French, German and English). I don't know for sure in English, but in Dutch we can use "forums" or "fora", both are correct. Thanks to my Latin studies i prefer "fora". Never thought i'd talk about this in such a topic [/O/T]

i gave up on trying to hook up my xfi to my case front panel. went out & purchased the creative i/o add on. i believe this is creatives intent with their design.
bty, as far as i know creative xfi is pretty much digital wich is the main thing that is screwing you up. i may be wrong, but dont think so.

What X-Fi do you have and did you buy the upgrade kit off the Creative website?

Cheers,
