VXD -> WDM in Windows 98SE
Ok, this is what I need to know:
How to change from an Audigy1 card that was using VXD drivers to an integrated nforce2 audio card that ONLY has WDM drivers?
I have trying for two days straight with no luck. The drivers are supposed to be installed fine, the device manager shows no exclamation marks and all seems fine, but if I go to the Multimedia options in the Control Panel the card is not listed in the selection windows, and of course, I got NO sound. It even shows correctly Devices tab as working.
Please, I want a solution involving some kind of file deletion or addition (that may tell the PC to use VXD drivers), or some registry entry that must be changed in order to make WDM audio work.
I know so far that one of the ways is to erase windows and start from scratch, but I recently lost my HD and I don't want to pass through the re-install-everything process all over again.

Sorry, I've no suggestions other than the reformat you mentioned . . .
. . . but, I have heard changing from VxD to WDM in Win98 can be a tricky/nasty business
Hopefully there's someone with an answer out there
sorry
..err I just remembered I have 2 sounds cards installed,
old one using VxD, the new one using WDM,
and they're running OK for the most part.
I know it's not the same case as your situation,
but if you can think of anything I can check out on my OS,
feel free to ask. (I run Win98se also )

If possible, try installing NForce2 drivers manually (thru .inf file).
It might do the trick.

Well, I already have tried manually with no luck.
As I said, there is NO exclamation marks on the Device Manager, everything looks as if it was working, BUT I can't select the sound card in the Control Panel/Multimedia options.
I know it must be some registry setting not telling windows that the card is a valid sound card, and I know it MUST be the registry, because if I remove the registry files from the windows folder and install over the current windows installation using a clean registry, the WDM sound WORKS. (I know because this happened to me some time ago when experimenting with the Audigy)
Any registry gurus?
Vampyromaniac, Are you using BOTH cards at the SAME time on Windows 98SE?

I had similar problem with Win2k, but manual installation helped. Sorry, I can't help you further, even if I would like to.

I solved it!!!
Erased the registry ONLY and I'm now in the SLOW process of installing everything again
Oh, well, so much for a simple solution that I think only M$ can answer...

Nice, glad you got it worked out
Mind letting us other 98'ers know what key you had to delete?

I guess it's better than reinstalling whole OS
Just curious - why are you still on Win98?

Vampyromaniac, I deleted the WHOLE registry, I wish I knew what was the exact registry keys that cause the problem...
RIV@NVX, I still think 98 is better than XP in MANY ways, plus I change hardware rather frequently, WinXP is a pain in the a$$ when changing HW, specially MBs, with 98 I just enter in safe mode, delete the old HW and restart, new HW found
BTW, Does any of you know about the WDM drivers problem under Win98SE that speed ups MP3s or any hardware accelerated sound?
I have to lower the Sound acceleration to the minimum (without turning it off) in order to get correct sound, and this doesn't happen in the nforce sound WDM drivers alone, also, when I had the LIve! and Audigy running with WDM drivers on 98SE, the same poblem occurs

AFAIK, Creative driver problem (I never tested it to confirm it, but it doesn't happen with kX). If it works, you should leave HW acceleration the way it is. If you lower it to to the minimum, EAX1/2 will not work.

Sorry, I've never experienced that . . .
My main playback card is my Philips, and it is using WDM, and no such problem so far
