Hi, I'm looking for assistance getting my sound driver installed for a new computer I built. Sadly the problem seems similar to the same problem that I see other people have had, and the posts I've researched are unclear what the solution is (or my solution differs).

The exact error when I try to install the RealTek audio driver is "Install RealTek HD Audio Driver Failure !!"

My motherboard is an Asus P5K-V, and I believe the sound is Realtek AC97. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. My research leads me to believe I need the right UAA driver for a 32 bit comp.

I've done a lot of searching, and was on the phone with Microsoft tech support for about 2 hours and they could not help fix the problem. So I'm really at my wits end right now.

Here is what I have done so far in an attempt to get this working.

1. Downloaded HP SP32646

2. Downloaded what I think is the correct Microsoft Hotfix

3. Downloaded from RealTek the most recent driver

4. Gone into the BIOS and switched back and forth from HD Audio to AC97


Please also note that I tried to uninstall the drivers under the device manager, but the system will not allow me. That just creates and error that says "Failed to remove device. The device may be required to reboot the computer."

Any suggestions?

First up, welcome to the forums!

What you need to do is extract the audio driver to a folder (if you've downloaded the exe version Winzip will allow you to extract it). Or, check the CD for your motherboard. If you go look on the CD you should find that the drivers are already extracted.

What you are looking for within the drivers package is a folder called 'MSHDQFE', in there one called 'Win2K_XP', and in there one called 'us'. Inside this last folder you will find 3 UAA files: one for Win2k, one for XP SP1, and one for XP SP2. Just pick the one you need, and off you go. If it asks you to reboot, don't. If it detects the Realtek HD audio, don't install the driver. After you've installed the UAA driver rerun the Realtek HD exe file again to properly install the driver, and the reboot the machine when it finalizes.

Ack, I forgot to mention that I had tried that also.

I opened the directory MSHDQFE, then opened WIN2K_XP, then the US directory

I'm using service pack 2, so I ran the file called kb888111xpsp2

then tried installing the RealTek drivers

same error!

However, when I looked closer at the CD that came with the Motherboard, I noticed a sticker on it that says "Vista Drivers Inside."

So I took a chance exploring the ASUS website, and I am currently downloading Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver WHQL V5.10.0.5391 for Windows 2K/XP

I will try this and re-post, and if that fails, start from scratch for the 3rd time.

Ok new reply to make sure I am doing this right, because it hasn't worked yet for me.

Before starting I opened up the Control Panel and Add/Remove programs. There is nothing listed for Realtek under there to remove.

I went to the MSHDQFE/WIN2K_XP/US directory

I am using service pack 2 for windows XP

I ran the file and it installed without a hitch

The computer DID NOT ask me to reboot

I then ran SETUP.EXE and got the same error.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope. You are doing everything that you should if you needed to install the UAA driver beforhand. As soon as you ran that update the OS would tell you that it found new hardware, in this case it would detect the Realtek HD audio. The only time it wouldn't is if the audio was disabled in the bios (different from switching from HD to AC97 front panel, btw).

At the moment, the only thing I can suggest would be to uninstall the UAA driver via 'Add/Remove Programs', reboot, and try the installation again. In 'Add/Remove Programs' you should see a listing called 'High Definition Audio Driver Package - KB888111'. Try uninstalling that, reboot, and reinstall the driver package first. If that doesn't work, double check that the UAA driver is in 'Add/Remove Programs' first before trying to install the drivers manually.

Oh, and for better luck, try the official driver off of Realteks site HERE (download site 3 is usually the faster site).

BTW, the bios setting for changing from HD to AC97 is only related to how the audio driver handles the front panel connector. With cases that use only the basic connections to the motherboard, you would want to run the sound card in AC97 mode. If the case uses all the audio connectors on the motherboard, then you would want to run the board in HD mode. The difference is that one supports auto sensing (such as when something is being plugged into the jack, and which jack), as well as support for rearranging what jack does what (in this case you could rearrange the speaker out jack to be a line in jack, and so fourth). It won't help with the installation.

I'll look into it a bit more. There's another trick I recall that I once had to do, but at the moment it escapes me (bed time, so I'm really tired). If I remember I'll post back. If anything I would suggest calling Asus directly for support. It's their board, so I have to assume that they would know a little more on some other alternative ways to install the driver.

Thanks for all the help, it still isn't working, but I'm still trying.

One thing I want to note, even though I have run the kb888111spxp2 update several times, I do not see anything under Add/Remove Prorams that references 888111. All I see is a reference to KB893803. I'm not sure why the 888111 isn't there, and I suspect it is related to the overall problem.

Something of interest. Both Sigmatel and Realtek HD audio have some of the same issues. In fact, I just got through fixing a system with the Sigmatel chip, and what I had to do to get it working.

If you go into 'Device Manager' be sure that there is no listing of the Realtek HD audio under the 'Sound' section. If there is, right-click on it, and choose to uninstall the driver.

Also within Device Manager expand the 'System' section. You may see a listing for 'Microsoft UAA'. If you do, yet it's not installed, again, right-click, and uninstall it.

If either of the 2 things are present, remove them, and try the install procedures again (first with the complete driver, then with first install the UAA driver followed by the sound driver).

Lastly, in the case of the Sigmatel driver I had to manually install the audio driver. I first installed the UAA driver, and followed that up by updating the driver as Windows kept reinstalling the older, and apparently incomplete driver.

Had the same problem with the same motherboard: ASUS P5K-V

But I managed to fix it.

Look under device manager for an unknown PCI
device. It will have a little yellow exclamation point
on it. Uninstall it. Then on control panel, add new hardware...the system will automagically detect new hardware, you should point it to your CD that came with your motherboard for the driver. Viola!

I've been having an identical problem with XP on a Gigabyte P35 DQ6 MB. I finally got the install to work - the fix was pretty easy once i stumbled on to it (for me anyway - I hope it works for you)

The offending agent appears to be the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio entry under the System Devices category in the Device Manager.

It needs to be uninstalled before installing the realtek drivers. It won't uninstall unless you disable it first though. After disabling, then uninstalling, reboot and install the realtek driver. This was finally successful for me.

I had already removed the KB888111 hotfix during earlier install attempts with no success. I'm not sure if this is required for the above to work but if doing the above doesn't work for you, go to the registry and delete the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP3\KB888111

entry and try again.

I hope this works for you. I went through a frustrating number of install attempts, failures, reboots, damned "Media" hardware found but unable to install, etc., until doing the above. Install was finally successful and sound now works!

Omg Tenmuses you are a god! I was nearly in tears with this problem. Your solution finally got my CreAtive I-trigue 2.1 3300 to work. Theres was no way I would have figured out where that bus driver was hiding. My super computer thanks you also. One ad to your solution though. It would be wise to download the HD driver from the manufacturer or microsofts website (since they have all 4 versions) Do not try to install the driver from the MB disk,(again) because it will just put that Mircrosoft Bus driver garbage back into the system. After uninstalling the bus driver the defective HD driver automatically uninstalls, then after you reboot, windows SHOULD detect 'new hardware'. When it does have the install wizard point to the folder where you stored the driver. Presto! Thank you again Tenmuses I was one step away for preforming a clean install (with a sledge hammer)
